Lists of Solicitors and Deputies at Chester
Exchequer Court 1758 to 1823
Extracted from CHES 14/81 held at the Public Record
Office and reproduced with permission.
The above piece number is part of the CHES series
of documents held at the Public Record Office, Kew. The piece contains
the records of the Exchequer Court of Chester Entry Books &
Minute Books of Decrees & Orders from 1562 to 1830. Unfortunately
only a small minority of the books contains an index and consequently
searching through the books for a given name is an extremely time-consuming
task. The 81 books each contain an average of 350 pages of secretarial
script and give brief details of the complainants' and defendant's
names and the nature of the case or cause. Locations are sometimes
included especially if the case is a land-related dispute.
The Rule Book for the period 24 July 1760 to
2 April 1829 contains several lists of Solicitors and Deputies appointed
to practise at the Exchequer Court. These are shown below and are
as transcribed from the book but placed in date order. Several names
have 'dead' written against them without a date. This is denoted
by an * against the entry. Those shown in light type are listed
on a previous folio.
