1870 Dec 30 - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - A RAID UPON HOUSES OF ILL-FAME IN SHEFFIELD. EXTENSIVE SEIZURES OF BEER, WINES, AND SPIRITS. (Incl) the Chief Constable next made a similar application, with reference to four hampers full of beer, wine, and spirits found at the house of John Hulley, Fitzalan street. Mr Mellor appeared for Hulley and Inspector Day stated that on Saturday night last he went with a search warrant to the house of Hulley's where he found 19 bottles of champagne 30 of Prussian sherry five of port one each of brandy, whisky and gin 45 bottles of ale and 41 of stout. The house was a house of ill-fame and in that statement he was confirmed by Mr Joseph Gell, boot and shoe maker who has the misfortune to live near to it. Mr Mellor contended that what had previously taken place at the house of Hulley had no reference whatever to the present proceedings. The bench could only deal with liquors before them, and he proceeded to argue that they were not in Hulley's house for the purpose of an unlawful sale but for the legitimate use of the occupants.

1874 Jan 20 - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - SHEFFIELD TOWN HALL - Before the Mayor (J. Hallam, Esq.) and the ex-Mayor (J. Fairburn, Esq.) ROBBERY FROM A HOUSE OF ILL-FAME. DISGRACEFUL REVELATIONS. A gaily-dressed woman who gave the name of Mary Jackson alias Flinn was charged with stealing several articles of wearing apparel, belonging to John Hulley who described himself as a pen-blade grinder living in Fitzalan street but whom no one would have taken for a grinder by his personal appearance. Mr Fairburn appeared for the prosecution and Mr Roberts for the defence. Mr Fairburn in opening the case, said there was reason to believe that the prisoner formed one of a gang of thieves who had been going about the town carrying on a systematic series of robberies. On Saturday night the prisoner and a man went to the house of the prosecutor, and asked to be allowed to go upstairs no doubt for an immoral purpose. When they went downstairs Mrs Hulley went to the room found the window open boxes and drawers ransacked and a number of articles missing. She called to her husband who stopped the woman but the man got away. Some of the stolen property was found upon her. She endeavoured to bribe both the officer and Mrs Rogers who searched her. The prosecutor was called to speak to these facts. In answer to Mr Roberts he said he had been in the house four years and three women lodged with him each of whom paid him 10s. per week. Mr Roberts: Is not your house a brothel? The prosecutor: You can call it such I suppose. Has it been a brothel for four years? Perhaps it has. The prosecutor admitted that the man who was with the prisoner paid a half crown for a pint of beer and three shillings for the use of the room. Upon this evidence the prisoner was remanded.
1880 Jun 03 - Sheffield & Rotherham Independent - KEEPING A DISORDERLY HOUSE IN SHEFFIELD . DEFENDANT COMMITTED TO PRISON. At the Sheffield Town Hall yesterday before the Mayor (E. Tozer, Esq.) and H. Stephenson Esq. John Hulley pen blade grinder No. 19 Fitzalan Street was summoned for keeping a house of ill-fame. The character of the defendant’s house has for a period of 12 years been known to the police but owing to the watchfulness of the defendant only a single conviction and that for selling intoxicating liquor without a licence has been recorded against him. Police-Sergeant Kilner who conducted the prosecution said on the 19th ult. he and Police-constable Wightman saw something which caused them to secret themselves at the rear of the defendant’s house about two o'clock in the morning. Contrary to previous experience they found the shutters unfastened and he and Wightman subsequently opened them. They saw a middle-aged man in a room downstairs with a young girl; another female was also in the room. A son of the defendant’s who had been walking sentry at the front of the house came in and told the girls not to open the door. They were then refused admittance. Police-constable Wightman corroborated this evidence. Mary Bacon No. 7 Court Neville Street said the defendant's house had borne an evil reputation for eight years and she herself had during that period frequently seen men and women enter or leave the house at late hours. Police-Sergeant Fagin stated that he had known the house as one of ill-fame for 11 years. At this stage the defendant admitted that the house had "until lately" been an infamous one and he called witnesses. Walter Jones said he lived in the defendant's house and was his brother -in-law. The only persons in it were his (the witness’s) sister Elizabeth Salt, a servant whose name was Polly and William Mack a young man who was there as a friend. Though previously disreputable the house had lately been respectable. Elizabeth Salt said she was 14 years of age. The defendant was her uncle. She had only just left school. The servant Polly was a young woman who did not sleep in the house. She did not know where she lived. Polly came to the house without being sent for. The house had been a respectable one for the last two months. As this witness gave very cautious and evasive replies, Police-sergeant Kilner said he would not cross-examine her. Joseph Hall pen-blade grinder Wadsley gave the defendant a good character as a regular workman but said he knew nothing about the character of his house. The Bench considered a clear case had been made out and committed the defendant to prison for one month with hard labour. (Same case reported in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph 03 June)- (inc. Walter Jones, brother-in-law of the defendant, said that he lived with him.

1887 Jun 23 - Sheffield Evening Telegraph HEAVY FINE BY THE SHEFFIELD MAGISTRATES THIS DAY This morning in the second court of the Sheffield Town Hall before Mr. Batty Langley and Mr. John Mallinson a purveyor of pies named John Hulley was charged with having kept an disorderly house at 44 Edmund street. Mr. W.E. Clegg prosecuted and the case was proved by Police-sergeant Platts and Police-constable Pepper. Hulley had been previously convicted of a similar offence and the Bench considering the present was a very case fined him £15 including costs or in default of payment two months with hard labour Mr Batty Langley complimented Police Sergeant Platts upon the straightforward manner in which he had given evidence and the sergeant suitably replied.

1865 06 May - Huddersfield Chronicle and West Yorkshire Advertiser - Magistrates in Petty Sessions April 29th 1865. On the Bench: Wright Mellor and John Beaumont Esqs. TWO GIRLS DECOYED INTO A HOUSE OF ILL-FAME. - William and Catherine Crowther, keepers of the Red Lion beerhouse, Castlegate, were charged with being the occupiers of a house of ill-fame; and Richard Brook and Charles Hulley, "professionals," were charged with being aiders and abettors. Mr Learoyd defended. Mr Superintendent Hannan said the information was laid under an act of parliament, which empower- -ed the bench to order the defendants to find sureties for their future good behaviour. It seemed as if it were impossible to stop the infamous conduct complained of in the information; and if the case was proved, he should ask the Bench to put such an amount of bail upon the defendants, as would be a warning to other persons. (At this stage, at the magistrates’ request, the court was cleared of every female with the exception of Catherine Crowther). Mr Hannan, resumed his remarks, and stated that Hulley and Brook were performers at the Cambridge singing saloon -- a house of great notoriety in the town. To prove the offence, he should call two girls, named Lavinia Haywood, 18 years of age, daughter (by marriage) of a bill poster, residing in Old- street, and Elizabeth Parker, aged 23 years, whose parents reside in Leeds-road. These girls attended the Cambridge singing saloon on Saturday evening, and, on leaving, were followed and joined by Hulley and Brook, who induced them to accompany them to Crowthers’ house, where they lodged during the night. On Sunday evening, the four slept in one bed, which also contained a child about two years of age. In the afternoon of Monday, the parents resolved to make enquiries at Crowthers’ with a view of ascertaining the whereabouts of their daughters. All knowledge of the girls was denied; but a policeman was sent for, and they were found locked up in a room with a man who was known to be married. Crowther was before the justices last week, when he (Mr Hannan), stated his belief that it was the intention of the defendant to keep his house respectably; but this case who will would show them that no beerhouse-keeper could carry on a legitimate trade in Castlegate, without resorting to that immoral system, and that it was through “unfortunates” that they got a livelihood. Mr Learoyd took a preliminary objection to the information, and contended that there was no statute which gave the magistrates power to bind Hulley and Brook to their future good conduct. Lavinia Haywood was called into court first, and she added that Catherine Crowther knew whose daughter she was, and that she was a single woman. Cross-examined: She had not been leading a loose life previously. The young men persuaded them to go with them. Had been twice to the Cambridge, and during the last 12 months only a few times to dancing rooms. Parker had been her companion for two years. Witness, who was a "feeder," had not been employed for the last month -- there have been being no work. On the Tuesday, she and Parker promised to tell the young men, whether they would accompany them to a place where they (defendants) would make arrangements. Elizabeth Parker narrated a similar story to that of the last witness. She stated that Hulley and Brook paid 7s. 6d to the keeper of the house for breakfasts and accommodation, and that Haywood received 2s. Police-sergeant Worsnip said he went to Crowthers’ beer house, and asked the landlord and landlady if two girls of the name of Parker and Haywood had been there, and they replied. "No; not that they were aware of." Catherine Crowther said she knew "a Parker," but nothing further. He went upstairs, and found a room door locked. A came from this chamber, which contained one bed, in which the two girls lay. There were three bottles of ale on the table in the room . The man acknowledged that he was from the Cambridge Arms, and that he was married. He took Haywood to her mother, but Parker refused to go home, and he conveyed her to the police station, her companion volunteering to go with her. After the delivery of a very able address by Mr Learoyd in defence, the magistrates retired, and, on their return into court, the Chairman said Hulley and Brook would be discharged. Although they did not intend to bind them over, yet the enormity of the offence was not lessened. Their conduct was most disgraceful, and they hoped it would be a warning to them. Brook: It will indeed, sir. The Crowthers were called upon to find sureties -- themselves in £50, and two in £25 each - for their good behaviour for the next twelve 12 months. The bench were glad that Mr Hannan had brought the case forward. Mr Hannan said it was disgraceful that performers should take advantage of an audience, and the respectable portion of the community ought to aid the police in such cases. The male defendant could not procure bail, and was sent to prison for one month.
