1883 25 Jun - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - DONCASTER AND NEIGHBOURHOOD. SAD BATHING FATALITY AT MEXBRO’. A lad named George Ulley, residing at Market street, Mexbro’, met with his death while bathing in the River Don, near the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Railway, at Mexbro’, on Saturday afternoon. It appears that the deceased, who was about 16 years of age, went to bathe in company with four lads named Batty, Morris, Johnson, and Jenkins, the two latter remaining on the bank to mind the clothes of the other lads. Ulley was able to swim, but on attempting to swim across the river at a point where the water was about nine feet in depth, he was observed to struggle and call for help. He then sank twice immediately. Batty and Johnson ventured, hand-in-hand, into the water, to attempt to save their companion, but their efforts were unavailing. A stick was held out to Ulley as he was struggling, but he was too exhausted to reach it. A number of men attempted to rescue the deceased, by diving after him, and one named Sykes succeeded in touching him, but the body was not recovered for three-quarters of an hour, when a boatmen named Woodhouse brought it to the surface by means of a boat hook.
1883 25 Jun - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - FATAL BATHING ACIDENT AT MEXBRO’. An inquest was held on Monday, at the Montagu Arms Hotel, on the body of a lad named George Ulley, who was drowned on Saturday while bathing in the River Don. Cornelius Ulley, uncle to the deceased, said his nephew could swim, and was not subject to fits. He had cautioned him against bathing in the river. John Batty, 18, collier, said he was present when the deceased was drowned. Deceased was attempting to swim across the river, and when he reached deep water he struggled and shouted “Oh, Batty, I’m done,” and sunk. The other bathers present tried to get him out, but could not succeed in doing so. The water was nearly fifteen feet deep at the spot where deceased went down. It was stated by a juror that several persons had been drowned at the spot in question. The witness Batty said the deceased complained of feeling hot before he went into the water. A verdict of “Accidentally drowned” was returned.

1837 25 Feb - Sheffield Independent, and Yorkshire and Derbyshire Advertiser. TOWN-HALL - Tuesday -- Before the Rev. W. Alderson, and J. Bagshawe, Esq. Thomas Hurst, Joseph Bateman, Samuel Rodgers, and Thomas Hulley were charged with the robbery of the house of Mrs Highland, in Westfield-place, on Wednesday night last. Mr Benjamin Linley, a lodger in the house, proved, that on Thursday morning, he found the house had been entered by the cellar grate and that the great coat now produced his property had been stolen. Mrs Stray, of Silver-street Head, deposed that Rogers called at her shop on Thursday, and offered the coat for sale, when she, suspecting it to have been stolen, sent for Bland. Before he came, however, Rodgers went out, and joining Bateman and Hulley, who were waiting near, they all ran off. She gave the coat to Bland, who apprehended the three soon after. Bateman said he and Hurst found the coat in Mount Zion Chapel yard, on Thursday morning. Hurst was therefore apprehended; and as he admitted his participation in the affair he and Bateman were committed Rogers was bailed and Hulley was discharged.
1837 Jun 19 - The Morning Post - G. Greaves and T. Hulley were brought up charged by C. Armitage of Carver-street with a felony. The prosecutor stated in evidence that on getting up on Sunday morning he discovered that his cellar grate had been removed during the night and his house robbed of a black cloth coat, two hats two pair of shoes some uncooked meat, and a a pound of butter. He afterwards found the shoes and one of the hats in his yard. William Bland proved that on Monday morning, about five o'clock, he and John Linley, an assistant, went to the house of the prisoner Greaves, in Love-lane. The prisoner Hulley was lying asleep upon the floor and there was a hat upon the table. Greaves was upstairs in bed and there was a black cloth coat hanging upon the chamber door. He awoke Greaves and asked him whose coat that was, and he replied that he did not know. He also said that he did not know by whom it was taken into the house. He brought Greaves down stairs, and told Hulley to get up and put on his hat, and he then put on a hat which was on the table. He then took the prisoners to the Town Hall. The hat and coat then produced were the same to which he had alluded to. The prosecutor and his wife identified the articles as being the same which were stolen on Sunday night. In his defence Hulley asserted that the hat was his own, having been formally worn by his father, who died three or four months ago. Greaves persisted in saying that he did not know anything of the coat. Committed for trial.
