1840 Mar 07 - Manchester Times and Gazette Oldham anti-corn Law meeting-a numerously attended meeting of the inhabitants of Waterhead Mill, Oldham, convened by thirty- two requisitionists, was held on Thursday evening week, at the George and Dragon Inn, Culvert, to take into consideration the propriety of petitioning the House of Commons for a total and immediate repeal of the corn laws; Mr John Robinson Junr., of Rosehill Mill, master cotton-spinner, presided. Resolutions expressive of the opinion of the company on the corn law question, and in favour of a petition for their total abolition, were unanimously passed, after speeches from Messrs. Stewart Buckley, Abraham Sutcliffe, James Harrison, Thomas Lees, James Greaves, Ambrose Hulley and James Wrigley. The proceedings were characterised throughout by unanimity and good feeling.

1845 Aug 30 - Manchester Times and Gazette Oldham - Publicans’ Licensing Day Ambrose Hulley, publican of the Cotton Tree, Waterhead Mill, was charged by policeman Clegg, with having company drinking in his house during the time of divine service on Sunday the 10th instant. -- The defendant stated that they were only two individuals in the house, one of whom was his uncle and the other a respectable neighbour. He was convicted in a penalty of five shillings and costs.

1858 18 Sep - Heywood Advertiser - Saturday 18 September 1858 - OLDHAM HUSH SHOPS.—On Thursday, at the Borough Court, Mr. Ireland, supervisor of Excise, preferred charges of selling ale without a licence against Sarah Hall, Hunter's Lane; Aaron Nichols, Jacob's Buildings, Back Henshaw.street; John White, Maygate Lane, North Moor ; Martha Hulley, Cross-street, Bottom of Moor (previously convicted) ; and Sally Bromfield, Back Rook-street. All pleaded guilty, and after the Bench had heard evidence as to the length of time the defendants had been engaged in their illegal traffic, they said that they were determined to suppress that objectionable, wicked, and demoralising practice, and they fined Hall £6, including costs Hulley, £20 ; Dransfield, £5; and Nichols and Whitehead, £10 each.—The punishment in default of payment is imprisonment during Her Majesty's pleasure.
