2016 18 May - email from Jim Bradley <jimbrad64@gmail.com> concerning Mary Lees:
Hi Ray, I came across your detailed pages on the family of Jonathan Hulley and Mary Lees - http://www.tiger2.f2s.com/FamilyHistory/familytrees/yorkshire/04/pafn01.shtml I have more information on Mary Lees that might be of interest:
Mary Lees matches as the sister of William Lees and Jane Lees of Pastures. Mary's sister Betty Lees matches as our 3x great grandmother. Betty and Mary had a brother called Ambrose Lees 1794 -1858, who was the first Ambrose Lees in the area. This was a very unusual name that can be matched to the one family line. Like Mary, Betty had a son called Ambrose when she married John Lees. This Ambrose Lees is our 2x great grandfather.
The birthplace of Mary in 1851 was very faint and most likely Saddleworth as with the other census returns rather than Springhead. Austerlands was given as the baptism abode for her and her older brother John. Betty was younger and her abode was Strines, followed by the later children at Pastures, with the last being William in 1801. (The son William had a son with another unusual name, Joel, born 1839, likely getting the name from Mary's son born 1808. He had married Nancy Broadbent, born 1808 in Saddleworth. Nancy is likely to match as a sister of Joel Hulley's wife Jane Broadbent.)
Pastures refers to the farm between Woodbrook and Scouthead. This was a property then leased by James Lees of Slack Hall on the western side of Austerlands. James Lees of Slack Hall was William Lees' uncle, and their family can be traced back to the 1600s living at the same property through various wills. William's parents John & Betty lived at Crossbank, immediately to the west of Austerlands. Crossbank is adjacent to Lowerfold, the property owned by Jane Lees' parents (wife of William Lees of Pastures). As with Mary Lees, the parents William and Jane later moved to Spring Hill near Waterhead Mill. There is a will for William which is one I have not yet looked at on my previous visits to Lancashire Record Office.
I have attached a working drawing showing the family lines linked by the wills and abodes, with a map and further notes to help explain this. The other Lees family line refers to a property at Whams off Den Lane, where our other 3x great grandparent John Lees (husband of Betty Lees) came from.
If you have access to Ancestry this link will take you to Mary Lees on our tree. Those shown on the drawing are included with the relevant documents and further details: <http://person.ancestry.com/tree/26949422/person/26897213300/facts>
Feel free to ask for more information.
