1853 01 Jan - Huddersfield Chronicle and West Yorkshire Advertiser - SADDLEWORTH - DISTRESSING GUN ACCIDENT. - an inquest was held on Wednesday last at the White Lion Inn, Old Delph, before George Dyson, Esq., and a respectable jury, of which Mr Edmund Buckley, of Stubbing, was foreman, to enquire into the cause of death of a young child, six years of age, named Elizabeth Hulley, daughter of James Hulley, of Linfits, who met with her death as follows: -- On Christmas night, one of the brothers of deceased named Joseph, went into a back room to fetch the meal box, while deceased and another sister stood by a table facing the back room door; but by some accident, the son knocked the gun off the shelf in getting the meal box, and the former exploded, blowing out the candles, and lodging the greater portion of the charge in the head of deceased, who immediately expired from the injuries inflicted upon her, in spite of medical aid. The Coroner strongly censured the father for his carelessness in placing the gun on the meal shelf in a loaded state with a cap upon the nipple, and he said he was of opinion that the jury could not find a verdict of accidental death. The following verdict was therefore returned: -- "that Elizabeth Hulley, on the 25th day of December instant, died from a gunshot wound, caused by a gun falling from and with a loose shelf, and thereby going off, such gun having been placed on such shelf by James Hulley, the father of the said deceased."

Whitehead, John Hirst, and George Shaw, Esqs. WILFUL DAMAGE TO YOUNG TREES. George Broadbent, of Pingle Mill, near Delph, charged Mary Hulley, of Millwood, with doing damage to young trees in the plantation there, by throwing ashes and refuse thereon, whereby many were killed. Mr N. Learoyd appeared for complainant, and Mr Redfern, of Oldham, for the defendant. It turned out that the plantation in question was disputed property, and both parties agree to leave the matter in the hands of the chairman to settle. This he kindly undertook to do, in order to prevent an expensive lawsuit.

2011 31 Dec - Note from Barry Collins:
Hannah Hulley had another son Newland Hulley born 25 October 1855 at Smith Street Hill, Waterhead, Oldham. No father is mentioned on the BC but it is believed to be Newland Gartside (one of my ancestors). Newland Gartside was quite a character and was in prison at least two times that I know of, and got away with it once. His last conviction that I know of was in 1864 (given 5 years), and in 1871, Newland changed his name to William, and can be found in the 1871 census as follows:
1871 census Waterhead, Oldham William Garside Head M 48 Weaver Saddleworth, Yorks Hannah Garside Wife M 45 Weaver Saddleworth, Yorks ----- This is Hannah Hulley, and they were never married ! Joseph Garside son U 21 Turner Saddleworth, Yorks ----- This is Joseph Hulley Samuel Garside son U 15 Turner Saddleworth, Yorks ----- This is Newland Hulley
We believe Newland Hulley changed his name because of his father Newland Gartside. In fact Newland (aka Samuel) is living with Newland's brother Samuel, and his wife Elizabeth in Manchester, and was baptized there, as Samuel Gartside in 1863 (son of Newland and Hannah Garside)....... A bit complicated but been through this whole scenario several times. Sadly, however I have no clue what happened to Newland Hulley (aka Samuel Gartside) ..... Nothing for Newland Hulley, and some possibilities for Samuel Gar(t) side. Also I do not know what happened to Hannah Hulley, since in 1881 Newland (William) Gartside is living with an Irish lady called Ann ! ...... Could this be Hannah, no clue as I was not able to find a death for her but know when Newland died and was buried without any spouse. I am not sure who the father of Joseph (1849), and Mary (1852) is but possibly Newland Gartside. Joseph emigrated to America around 1883 (did not find any imigration record), and can be found living in Connecticut in the 1900/1910/1920 census's. Unfortunately the 1890 census for the USA is fragmented so no record of him at this time. In 1900 he is living with. According to the US census Joseph and Emily has twelve (12) children seven (7) do which survived. Additions to you list that I know of for Joseph and Emily is as follows: Mary Alice b. 1880 died SepQ 1882 in Oldham, Lancs Samuel b. 1881 in Oldham Lucy Alice b. 1882 in Oldham Sarah E b. Feb 1883 in New York Emilly b. Sep 1891 in NY Joseph Edward b. 27 Nov 1893 in Cold Springs, NY, -- married Doris Lillian Kershaw (b. 25 Jan 1899 in Oldham, and died 2 Dec 1991 in Shelton, Fairfield, Connecticut). Had three (3) children tow of which are Fred (b. 1925 in Connecticut), and Louise (b. 1928 in Connecticut).
Just some background on your Hulley line ............... Barry

1858 16 Jan - Report in the Sheffield & Rotherham Independent. Supplement:
SEIZURE OF AN IRON-SAFE BORING INSTRUMENT IN MANCHESTER.
On Thursday afternoon, an instrument for cutting holes in, and destroying the locks of, iron safes, exactly similar to one found in London two or three months since, was seized at a house in Rochdale-road, occupied by James Smith, a greengrocer. The circumstances of the capture are these: - Some time since, a quantity of British notes and gold were stolen from the General POst Office in London; and very recently two of the stolen notes were paid in at the Bank of England in London. They were traced to the possession of a person in Hull, and upon application being made to him by Sergeant Haydon, of the London detective force, to whom the investigation of the matter had been entrusted, he stated that he had obtained them from James Wardle, a cheese-factor, of Manchester. With the assistance of Chief-Inspector Maybury and Sergeant Bateman, of the Manchester detective force, Wardle was apprehended on Thursday; and in consequence of a statement made by him, that Smith had given the notes to him, Smith was also apprehended in the public street. On going to Smith's house, and searching it, the officers found a man named Newland Gartside there, and also a leather portmanteau, in which was carefully deposited the safe-boring instrument, with centre-bits, and all the other apparataus complete, with leather bags for each of the various pieces of which the instrument consists. - Manchester Guardian.
1858 16 Jan - report in The Manchester Guardian:
POLICE COURTS: CITY POLICE COURT. CHARGE OF HAVING IRON-SAFE BORING IMPLEMENTS.
Newland Gartside was charged with being in possession of a number of housebreaking and safe-boring implements. Chief-inspector Maybury, of the detective police, said that he, and Bateman, and a London officer, apprehended two men in Manchester, on Thursday night, on a charge of being concerned in a robbery of Bank of England notes in London. Afterwards they went to the residence of one of the prisoners, a man named Smith, in Rochdale Road. The prisoner (Gartside) was sitting in the kitchen, and a portmanteau was in the room, which the prisoner said contained tools. Upon the prisoner a key was found, with which the portmanteau was opened, and it was then seen to contain a peculiar instrument, which is used by burglars to bore holes in iron safes, a skeleton key, a "jemmy", a pair of goloshes, an oil bottle, and a number of other articles which are used for burglarious purposes.
A young man, named Betteney, said a cashbox cotaining between £70 and £80 was stolen from a house in Canal-street, Ancoats, in March last, and the prisoner had answered the description which his brother-in-law had given of the thief. The servant who was living in the house at the time, has since left: and in order to have time to find her, and to obtain other witnesses, Mr. Maybury applied for a remand of the prisoner to Wednesday. The prisoner said the portmanteau was given to him by a man in Shudehill, for whom he carried it to Smith's house. He was remanded to this day (Saturday).

1861 23 Nov - Huddersfield Chronicle and West Yorkshire Advertiser - SADDLEWORTH -WILFUL AND MALICIOUS DAMAGE. On Wednesday last, at the Uppermill petty sessions, a number of disorderly youths were summoned, charged with having wilfully and maliciously damaged the house door of James Mills, at Quick-edge, on the night of the 15 inst., by throwing stones against it; also with pulling down some rail-fencing belonging to Lot Hall. On the names being called over it appeared that they had settled the case with complainant. The young men summoned for the above offence were Thomas Winterbottom, mechanic, Stonebreaks; Edwin Broadbent, piecer; Joseph Hulley, warper; John William Hirst, David Jackson, Robert Diggle, and Benjamin Kershaw, all of Shelderslow; John Whittaker and Edward Jackson, piecers, New-row; and Enock Buckley, of Knowsley, near Austerlands. It seemed to be generally be regretted in the neighbourhood that the case had been settled. It is to be hoped the defendants will see the folly of their ways, and not be guilty of the like again. The next time they are caught they may not fall into the hands of lenient Mr Mills, but may perhaps have to pay the penalty of their misdeeds by being placed in a under the care of Mr Shepherd, at Wakefield, for some time.

1854 12 Aug - Huddersfield Chronicle and West Yorkshire Advertiser - SADDLEWORTH - PETTY SESSIONS. Offences against the Factory Act. On Wednesday, the 9th instant, Messrs Schofield and Broadbent, of New Delph, cotton spinners, were cited before James Heywood Whitehead and Thomas Robinson, Esqs., charged by Mr Edward Davies, sub-Inspector of factories, with having, on the 25th day of July last, employed Ann Hulley, Sarah Wrigley, Betty Schofield, Alice Hulley, and Elizabeth Bright, females above the age of 13 years, after the hour of six o'clock in the evening of the said day. Mr Broadbent pleaded guilty, and a fine of £3 in the first case and £1 in the other four cases was inflicted, which, together with the costs, amounted to upwards of £10. Hard Case under the Factory Act. Mr George Broadbent, of Pringle Mill, near Delph, was charged by the aforesaid sub-Inspector, with employing one Lucy Hulley, a child under the age of 13 years, before the hour of 12 o'clock at noon, and after the hour of one o'clock in the afternoon, of the 24th day of July last. Mr Broadbent, in explanation of the offence, stated that one of his slubbers had three pieceners at the time the offence took place, namely, one full-time and two short timers; that on the forenoon of the 24th ult. the full time piecener fell down in a fit, and had to be removed home, and had not been able to attend to her work since. The slubber could not procure another piecener to fill her place, so he ordered the short time piecener who had worked in the forenoon of that day to go again in the afternoon, which she did, and the inspector found her working when she ought to have been at school. After this explanation the bench inflicted the lowest penalty allowed by law, namely, £2 and costs.

Dear Mr. Hulley I found your name and e-mail address through the Family History Center in Salt Lake City,Utah,U.S.A. Their web site is www.Familysearch.org This is the site of the Church of Latter Day Saints.
I'm writting to you in regards to the family name of Hulley. My mothers maiden was Hulley and her father was William Hulley. Willam Hulley was born Sept. 8,1875 at Virginia City,Nevada U.S.A. There are no records of birth for that time period due to a fire at the Court House where the records were kept.
William's mother died when he was four years old and he was sent to Lancashire ,England and was raised by Relatives. At the age of eleven he was apprenticed at the Bucktonvale Print and Finishing Works in Bucktonvale. At the age of 23 he returned to Nevada.
At the time of his birth there was four Hulley's listed in a census of Virgina City, Storey County,Nevada ,U.S.A. that was done in July of 1870.Their given names were John,Joseph,Thomas and William all from England.Thomas is the one I believe to be my great grand father.Thomas was married to a Margaret Jackson at the Parrish Church in Aston under Lyne in the county of Lancashire,They lived in the town of Mossley at that time. They had one daughter born in England. Margaret died in 1868 and is buried in Virginia City.Thomas remarried and had a son who was three years old in July of 1875. according to a census taken in July of 1875 and only the initial was given for the wifes given name. In as much my Grandfather hadn't been born yet he was not listed in that census. The second wife of Thomas was also born in England and it is possible that they were married in England. I have found the grave site of Thomas in Virginia City,He died in Jult of 1900, which listed his birth place as Delph England . He is buried in a plot next to a woman name unkown because of damage done to her marker. Also another site next to those is another womans grave ,name unkown also. The dates of death of the two women is also unkown due to damaged markers.
Is there a way that I could find out If Thomas had returned to England and had gotten married again in the area of Aston under Lyne. Would you have the addresses for the hall of records there in Aston under Lyne?
Any information that you can give me on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
The Taylor Family is from the Leeds and Huddersfield area of England.
Thank you for your time. William Taylor

Ray Thank you for the info that you sent back to me.The details of Thomas Hulley and Margaret Jackson I got from a copy of an entry of marrige that I received from the general registe office in London when me and wife was in England in 1991.This copy says that they were married on the 17th of Feb. 1861. He was of full age and a bachelor was working as a printer,as best as I can read it,he lived in Mossley, his fathers name was Jonathan Hulley and he was a weaver. Margaret Jackson was of full age and was a spinster, no profession, also living in Mossley. Her fathers name was Miles Jackson and he was a waste dealer. According to a record of cemetries that I found Magaret died in 1868 and was buried in Virginia City, Nevada. The cenus of 1875 shows that Thomas was married to a women whose first name started with the letter M. That they one son at that time age 3 which would have been the right age that you stated in your letter. Thomas also had a daughter by his first wife and her name was Jennie (sp.) she was married to a man named James Stoddard who was present at Thomas Hulley's death bed along Jennie was born in April of 1864 and was born in England. At the time of Thomas's death his was married again. In that case his last will and testament was signed and dated the 21st of june 1900 which was about a three weeks before he died, which was on 15th of July. I can make copies of some of records and mail them to you via regular mail if you would like to have them. Are the Hulley's that I have been relating to ,related to your family tree. My grandmother Hulley was born in or around Mossley,Her maiden name was Ellen Redfearn and her family lived in Heys Head. We visited a cousin in Staleybridge when we were in England, her mother and my grandmother were sisters. We had a find visit with her and a sister who has since passed away. Thank you again for the info. Bill Taylor
