Notes
217. Frederick Hulley
Information obtained from Lucie Hulley (born 1906 died 1999)
Harriet Hulley was her Grandmother who had a lover who died before a child of the union (Frederick) was born in 1868. Frederick married Lucie EA Harris in 1903 and had 5 children, the second of whom was Lucie. Frederick Hulley's birth certificate for 1868 is erroneous. As there were already two Francis Hulleys in the family - father and son - she gave this name as the father and her own mother's maiden name (Rodger) as hers.

1914 - on the death of her husband Frederick, Lucie EA hulley returned to England with her five children on board the SS Lusitania. it was at the outbreak of the First World War and this ill-fated ship had not been long on the high seas before she was intercepted by the German Navy and searched. Fortunately for the passengers (mainly women and children) the Germans allowed the ship to proceed unmolested and it arrived safely in England. Some months later on its inward journey from America the SS Lusitania was torpeoed by a submarine off the coast of Ireland and sank with the loss of about 2000 lives.
Lucie and her children settled in Colchester where she died in 1918 of cancer.
