1893 22 Sep - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - THE WATH MAIN RIOTS - THIRD DAY’S HEARING. COMMITTAL OF 20 PRISONERS. (incl.) The next evidence was heard on behalf of Samuel Newhill. Charles Hulley, miner, Market terrace, Wath, said on September 6th he went down Wath street with Newbill at 3 o’clock. They proceeded to the Wath Main Colliery, where Newbill was employed as a blacksmith. Witness’s step-father was working at the colliery that day, and he went to the pit to look after him. They got no further than just inside the yard gates. The rioters were coming towards them from the direction of the pit. Some of the rioters were demolishing the offices then, and afterwards others set fire to the premises. Newhill made some remarks to the crowd, the police charged directly afterwards. Newhill did not in any way assist the rioters or incite them.
1893 13 Dec - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - THE YORKSHIRE COLLIERY RIOTS. PROCEEDINGS AT LEEDS ASSIZES. CONCLUSION OF THE WATH CASE. (incl.) Charles Hulley, miner, Wath, was with Newhill on the canal bridge at one o’clock on September 6, and remained with him about half an hour. Newhill and his son went with witness to the colliery. They heard some men in the crowd threaten to fire the cottages. Newhill said, “For God’s sake don’t do that, they are platelayers cottages.” That seemed to check the crowd. He did not see the prisoner take part in the rioting. Mrs. Mary Edwards, of Wath, said on Sept 6th she was at the colliery. She saw Newhill, his son, and Hulley together. Newhill started off, but was seized and brought back by the police. He was not taking part in the rioting. (Newhill found not guilty).

1888 06 Mar - Sheffield Evening Telegraph - THE DROWNING FATALITY AT LITTLE LONDON. INQUEST THIS AFTERNOON An inquest was held this afternoon by Mr. C. G. Busby, coroner for the Hundred of Scars- -dale, in one of the offices at Messrs. Tyzack, Sons, and Turner’s Little London Works, on the body of Thomas Sharp Hague, aged 11 years, son of Joseph William Hague, rasp cutter, Fitzwilliam street. It will Be remembered that the boy was drowned in the Little London Dam, on Sunday afternoon. (inc.) FRED HULLEY, son of Joseph Hulley, 10 Bath street, stated that about four o’clock on Sunday afternoon he met the deceased in Fitzwilliam street, as he was coming away from Sunday school. They and Sev - -eral other boys went to Little London Dam, and commenced sliding on the ice. There were five or six other boys on the ice when they got on. They began playing a game of “follow your leader,” the deceas- ed being the leader. They crossed the dam, and as they were going over the ice near the bank where the stream runs, Hague went through into the water. The deceased held up his hands, and he (witness) got him to the edge of the ice, when it gave way again, letting both of them into the water. He held on to the edge of the ice, and after a time managed to get out of the water. He then ran home as quickly as he could. A verdict of “Accidental death” was returned.
1888 07 Mar - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - THE FATAL ICE ACCIDENT AT LITTLE LONDON DAM Mr. C.G. Busby, coroner for North Derbyshire, held an inquest yesterday at the offices of Messrs. Tynack, Sons, and Turner, Little London Works, on the body of Thomas Sharpe Hague, 11 years of age, son of Joseph William Hague, rasp cutter, who lives in a court in Fitzwilliam street. The deceased was drowned in Little London Dam on Sunday. Joseph W.. Hague, father of the deceased, identified the body, and said he sent his son the Fitzwilliam street Mission Room at two o’clock on Sunday afternoon. When he heard of the accident he thought the lad had played truant, but the Superintendent of the Sunday school had since told him that the boy had attended Sunday school and then went to the dam. He was present when the body was found on Monday morning. Fred Hulley, son of Joseph Hulley, Forkmaker, of No. 10 Bath street, said he lived in the same yard as the deceased. When Sunday school was over, they went together to Little London Dam. Several other boys went with them. They walked on the ice from the side nearest the railway to the opposite side. Hague led the way, and they were playing “Follow my leader.” Several other boys were on different parts of the dam at the same time. When they came to where the stream runs to the wheel the ice broke and the deceased fell through. He (witness) tried to help him out. The deceased held his hands up and he caught hold of them, but the ice broke again and both were immersed. He (witness) held on to the edge of the ice, and then got out on to the ice again and went home. Several persons then knew of the accident. John William Bramall, a boy, whose parents live in Tamplin road, said he saw Hughes and others on the dam, coming towards the stream. Hague was trying the ice when he went into the water. He (witness) ran across the river Sheaf, up the bank, and saw the deceas- -ed sink. He shouted for Mr. Morton, who came and tried to rescue the deceased. Walter Morton, army reserve man, of No. 7 Tamplin road, said about 4 o’clock on Sunday afternoon he heard that a boy was drowning in Little London Dam. He went across the fields, through the Sheaf, and up the dam side. About ten or twelve yards from the bank he saw the hole in the ice where Hague had sunk, and saw the lad’s cap floating on the water. He had pulled off his shoes as he was going to the place. He entered the water and dived down but could not see on account of the muddy state of the water. He stayed in the water about twenty minutes, but failed to find the body. The ice was not strong enough to hold him. When he stepped on it, it broke, and he had to break his way from where he was let in to the hole through which the deceased had disappeared; he injured his wrist in doing so. He knew the dam well, and had been in the habit of swimming there ever since he was a boy. He held a certifi - -cate from the Humane Society for saving a man from drowning in Ireland. Police-constable Humphrey, stationed at Norton, said he was present when the body was recovered on Monday morning from the dam. The water had been run off, and a man named William Rheniah got the body from the mud at the bottom of the stream. He believed there was a caution board at the far side of the dam. The dam was enclosed, but the gate was generally open. A Juror expressed th opinion that people ought to be prevented from going on to the ice there. The Coroner said Morton had behaved in a most plucky manner, and he should suggest that the Hum - -ane Society be communicated with, that his services might again be recognised. The jury said they should certainly do so. A verdict of “Accidental death” was returned. Messrs. Tynack, Sons, and Turner request us to state with regard to the Little London Dam, that all the water used at their works, with the exception of drinking water, is drawn from that dam, so that the depth of the water is constantly varying, a state of things which render it very unsafe for skating purposes. Not only are there several water wheels kept working, but the water is also drawn off for many other purposes.
1890 Feb 06 - Sheffield Daily Telegraph EXTRAORDINARY SHOOTING CASE IN SHEFFIELD - TWO BOYS INJURED. Last night much excitement was occasioned in the neighbourhood of Bowden street and Wellington street by three revolver shots and it appeared that a boy had been deliberately fired at by two youths. It seems that about 8.20 Ernest Garratt aged 13 was waiting in Bowden street for a boy named Fred Hulley. With two other boys he stood outside a smith’s shop occupied by Hulley’s father and they noticed two youths between 18 and 20 years of age in an archway about eight yards below. Glancing round Garratt saw the two had revolvers in their hands and that they were pointed in the direction of himself and his companion. Almost immediately there were a couple of flashes and reports and he felt something strike his boot. He took no notice of this and on his companion suggesting that they should go and see what was the matter they proceeded in the direction of the young man. He had hardly moved a step, however when one of the youths again raised his revolver and fired the contents of the barrel striking Garratt on the leg. He fell down and cried out and the men in Hulley’s shop who were already on their way out to see what the firing meant came to his assistance. He was carried back into the shop and whilst the assailant who had last fired decamped his companion came to see if the lad was hurt. Garratt promptly told the onlookers of the fact that he also had a revolver, and the youth was seized by three men. He denied the charge but on a search being made a revolver and spare cartridges were found on him. It was suggested that a policeman should be called and this made the prisoner very energetic in his protestations of innocence. He asked the people not to fetch a policeman, and he would pay for what had been done although he himself had not fired. No one seemed particularly anxious to detain him and he was ultimately liberated on his promising to go and find his companion and bring him back.It is needless to say that whether he was successful in his search or not he did not put in an appearance. This however did not conclude the proceedings as almost immediately after another boy was hurt. His name was George Holmes and according to his statement he was at home doing his lessons when he heard the revolver shots. He hurried outside saw a youth run up Bowen street and along Wellington street and then noticed a crowd in the former thoroughfare . Curiosity lead him to go and ascertain the cause and he watched the captured man searched. The revolver discovered being loaded a man who is said to be an ex-soldier was asked to discharge it so that there would be no chance of anyone else being injured. Holms states that this man pointed the revolver in the air and pulled the trigger about half-a--dozen times without result. He thought it was not loaded and was bringing it down this side when it accidentally went off. The pellet struck a wall and then hit Holmes on the leg. Both the injured lads were taken to an adjacent chemist’s shop and afterwards to the Hospital West street . It was there found that the pellet had gone through Garratt’s corduroy trousers and thick stockings and then slightly penetrated the knee. Holmes’ would was a superficial one the missile having glanced across his leg. The boy’s wounds were dressed and they were afterwards conveyed to their homes. Garratt lives at No. 69 Hodgson street and Holmes who is 14 years of age at No. 112 Wellington street. Police-constable King who was on duty in Broomhall street was called to the place after the captured man had been liberated and he took possession of the revolver. It is a five-chambered plated “Bulldog” and seems to be an excellent weapon and far from a toy the cartridges being large ones. It was not thought that ball cartridges were fired but blank ones sealed with hard wax which formed a pellet about a third of an inch thick. These when fired at close quarters are capable of doing considerable injury. The police made inquiries in the matter but nothing could be ascertained as to who the assailants were. The lads who are ging on well will probably be under medical care for some time.
