1892 02 Mar - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - EXTENSIVE THEFT OF CUTLERY IN
SHEFFIELD. Yesterday, at the Sheffield Town Hall, before the Stipendiary
Magistrate, Kenneth Robson, spring knife cutler, Leicester street, and George Hulley,
fork maker, Brook lane, were charged with breaking into the warehouse of Messrs.
Stacey Brothers, cutlery manufacturers, on February 5th, and stealing £25 worth of
cutlery, and William Steel, describing himself as an auctioneer, Castlefolds lane, was
charged with receiving the property, knowing it to have been stolen. Mr. Arthur Neal
prosecuted; Mr. Muir Wilson appeared for Hulley, Mr. R. Fairburn defended Steel, but
Robson was undefended.
Mr. Neal stated the case on behalf of the prosecution. On the night of February 5th
the warehouse of Messrs. Stacey Brothers was broken into, and a large quantity of
cutlery stolen. It appeared that on the following day Steel went to Derby, and offered
a considerable amount of cutlery to an auctioneer, Mr. Joseph Clark. Mr. Clark
ultimately purchased some cutlery, and as it was his custom to attend markets, he
sold some of the knives in the usual way. The police began to make enquiries about
the stolen property, and this evidently reached the ears of Steel, for he went to Clark
and manifested uneasiness, saying there had been something wrong, and that the
persons from whom he got the cutlery wanted it back. Mr. Clark said he was willing to
let it go back if he was paid. This was not done, and eventually a box containing a
quantity of goods was obtained by Inspector Thompson, from Mr. Clark. Robson had
previously been in the employ of Messrs. Stacey Brothers, and it would be proved
that the knives belonged to the firm, because many of them were an entirely new
pattern, which had never gone out.
Mr. Richard White, a partner in the firm of Messrs. Stacey Brothers, said that on
Friday evening, the 5th of February, he left the works all right. When he returned the
next morning he found the warehouse had been broken into, and pocket knives to the
value of about £55 had been stolen. On the 25th of February Inspector Thompson
produced to him 273 knives, which he recognised as the property of his firm. A large
number of the knives stolen were of an entirely new pattern, and had never been
placed on the market. Knives to the value of £14.11s. 9d,. had been recovered.
Witness knew Robson. He was formerly in their employ, leaving about last
midsummer. In rely to Mr. Wilson, witness said that he had never seen Hulley about
the firm’s premises.
Walter James Millington, clerk to Messrs. Stacey Brothers, stated that he locked the
premises on the night of February 5th.
Thomas Edwin Taylor, engine tenter, in the employ of Messrs. Stacey Brothers,
deposed that on the morning of February 6th he found the warehouse door
unfastened, and a skeleton key in the lock.
Joseph Clark. auctioneer, 10 Agard street, Derby, said that on the morning of
Saturday February 6th, he was visited by Steel, who wanted him to buy some knives.
He said he had them at the Durham Heifer Hotel, the Morledge. They went to the
hotel together, and a box containing the knives were taken to the witness’ house. The
knives were sorted out, and he paid 3s., 5s., and 7s. a dozen, according to size. He
asked Steel where he got them from, and he said from a little maker in Sheffield who
had the bailiffs in and wanted some money. The total amount he paid for the cutlery
was £14. 6s. Witness afterwards sold a number of knives by auction at Nottingham.
On a subsequent occasion he met Steel in the street. Steel said there was some
bother about the cutlery. The man who let him have it wanted it back, or some more
money. On another day Robson and Hulley called upon him. Robson said “Do you
know the knives sold to you by Steel were stolen?” and he replied he did not. Then he
said “ Well they were mine, and I want them back, or some more money.” This he
refused to do, but as they were hungry, he gave them a shilling. Then Steel called
upon him again, and he told him about the two men who had been to him. Steel said
their story was untrue. He, however, wanted the knives back, as some difficulty had
arose, but witness refused. Cross-examined by Mr. Wilson, witness said he had
previously bought a lot of knives from Steel. He did not know how many dozen knives
he had purchased from Steel on February 6th. He should say there were 50 or 60
dozen. Steel was a pot hawker.
Mr. Wilson: You mean to say you went and bought 50 or 60 ,dozen knives from a pot
hawker? I had bought goods from him before.
The public had better be warned against men like you. Don’t you know the majority of
the knives were worth 8s.a dozen, and that some of them were worth 5s. each? - No.
How much did you sell them at? - Oh, 2d. or 3d. apiece. The largest price I got for
one was 3s.
Now as to the interview between Hulley and Robson and yourself, what was said?
Robson said to me “I stole the knives, they didn’t belong to Steel.”
Didn’t Hulley say he had only got £4 of the swag? - He said he only got £4 as his
share.
Didn’t he say to you “You know they were stolen?” - No.
Didn’t you say “ If you make a bother I will snitch on you?” - No.
What did you say? - I said that I did not believe anything they said, and if they do not
go away I would have them locked up.
What did Hulley say? - He wanted to tell me how he broke into a cutlery manufactory,
but I did not want to hear him.
You were rather shocked, and stood aghast at talking to a burglar? - I told him I did
not want to know anything about it.
In cross-examination by Mr. Fairburn, witness said that when Steel came to him he
said that two men had brought him the cutlery to sell, but as he had not an
auctioneers’ licence, he wanted witness to buy it.
Detective Inspector Thompson deposed receiving the cutlery produced from Mr. Clark
on the 25th ult. The same night he charged Steel at his house. He replied “ I have not
stolen anything. A man came to me a fortnight last Saturday, and he said he had been
recommended to me. He said his father was a manufacturer and In difficulties, and
wanted to know if I would buy some knives. I said I would not. Then he asked me if
could sell them sell for him in the market, and I promised to sell them. I could not sell
without an auctioneers’ licence, but I went to Derby and saw Joseph Clark, who is an
auctioneer, and sold the cutlery to him for £14. 6s. I don’t know the man who brought
me the cutlery, but I could tell him if I saw him. He had a companion. When I came
back to Sheffield that night I met the men at my house, and gave them a bill for what I
had sold the knives. They gave me 10s. for my commission. The following night
witness was present when Police-constable Dye arrested Robson. He said nothing in
reply to the charge, but on the ay to the cells he said, “ I broke into Stacey’s; Hulley
was waiting for me outside. We took the stuff straight to Steel that night. We hadn’t
the ……….. stuff ten minutes. He was waiting for us. We had arranged to take it
there. We got nowt for it.
Police-constable Dye gave corroborative evidence as to the arrest of Robson.
Detective Wilson deposed to arresting Hulley.
The three prisoners were committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions.

Joseph Hulley, of Shiregreen, who had been summoned by Edward Gillott, of Thorpe Hesley, for tres-
-passing in pursuit of game on the 10th inst. at Scholes. The complainant said there were three men
together, when he went to them they threatened him with a gun, and also throw stones at him. Mr
Rhodes called four witnesses, who proved that at the time mentioned by the complainant, the defendant
was at a football match at Sheffield lane top, a distance of about 3 miles from the place at which it was
alleged the trespass had been committed. The Bench considered it a case of mistaken identity, and
dismissed the summons. The complainant had taken out a summons against another of the men, but,
on being informed that in that case also an alibi would be proved, he withdrew it.

REPORT OF THE COMMISSIONERS. The following is the full and official report to the Lunacy Board of
Messes Phillips and Williams, Commissioners in lunacy, on their recent investigation at the Wadsley
Lunatic Asylum: -- Re Benjamin Harrison, deceased, a pauper patient in the South Yorkshire Asylum at
Wadsley in the West Riding of York. We, the undersigned, at the request of our colleagues have held an
enquiry for the satisfaction of the board into the circumstances of the death of Benjamin Harrison. That
death, as the board is aware, had previously been the subject of a coroner's inquest, also of an invest-
-igation by the Committee of Visitors of the Asylum. The verdict at the inquest was "That the deceased
died from inflammation of the lungs, accelerated or caused by a fractured sternum and three broken ribs:
but as to where or when the injuries were inflicted there was not sufficient evidence before the jurors."
The Asylum Committee likewise failed to elicit where or when the injuries were inflicted.
We examined on oath the following 35 persons: (including) Joseph Hulley, a brother-in-law of the
deceased.

ed being the leader. They crossed the dam, and as they were going over the ice near the bank where
the stream runs, Hague went through into the water. The deceased held up his hands, and he (witness)
got him to the edge of the ice, when it gave way again, letting both of them into the water. He held on to
the edge of the ice, and after a time managed to get out of the water. He then ran home as quickly as
he could. A verdict of “Accidental death” was returned.

1888 07 Mar - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - THE FATAL ICE ACCIDENT AT LITTLE LONDON DAM
Mr. C.G. Busby, coroner for North Derbyshire, held an inquest yesterday at the offices of Messrs. Tynack,
Sons, and Turner, Little London Works, on the body of Thomas Sharpe Hague, 11 years of age, son of
Joseph William Hague, rasp cutter, who lives in a court in Fitzwilliam street. The deceased was
drowned in Little London Dam on Sunday. Joseph W.. Hague, father of the deceased, identified the
body, and said he sent his son the Fitzwilliam street Mission Room at two o’clock on Sunday afternoon.
When he heard of the accident he thought the lad had played truant, but the Superintendent of the
Sunday school had since told him that the boy had attended Sunday school and then went to the dam.
He was present when the body was found on Monday morning.
Fred Hulley, son of Joseph Hulley, Forkmaker, of No. 10 Bath street, said he lived in the same yard as
the deceased. When Sunday school was over, they went together to Little London Dam. Several other
boys went with them. They walked on the ice from the side nearest the railway to the opposite side.
Hague led the way, and they were playing “Follow my leader.” Several other boys were on different parts
of the dam at the same time. When they came to where the stream runs to the wheel the ice broke and
the deceased fell through. He (witness) tried to help him out. The deceased held his hands up and he
caught hold of them, but the ice broke again and both were immersed. He (witness) held on to the edge
of the ice, and then got out on to the ice again and went home.
Several persons then knew of the accident. John William Bramall, a boy, whose parents live in Tamplin
road, said he saw Hughes and others on the dam, coming towards the stream. Hague was trying the ice
when he went into the water. He (witness) ran across the river Sheaf, up the bank, and saw the deceas-
-ed sink. He shouted for Mr. Morton, who came and tried to rescue the deceased.
Walter Morton, army reserve man, of No. 7 Tamplin road, said about 4 o’clock on Sunday afternoon he
heard that a boy was drowning in Little London Dam. He went across the fields, through the Sheaf, and
up the dam side. About ten or twelve yards from the bank he saw the hole in the ice where Hague had
sunk, and saw the lad’s cap floating on the water. He had pulled off his shoes as he was going to the
place. He entered the water and dived down but could not see on account of the muddy state of the
water. He stayed in the water about twenty minutes, but failed to find the body. The ice was not strong
enough to hold him. When he stepped on it, it broke, and he had to break his way from where he was let
in to the hole through which the deceased had disappeared; he injured his wrist in doing so. He knew
the dam well, and had been in the habit of swimming there ever since he was a boy. He held a certifi -
-cate from the Humane Society for saving a man from drowning in Ireland.
Police-constable Humphrey, stationed at Norton, said he was present when the body was recovered on
Monday morning from the dam. The water had been run off, and a man named William Rheniah got the
body from the mud at the bottom of the stream. He believed there was a caution board at the far side of
the dam. The dam was enclosed, but the gate was generally open. A Juror expressed th opinion that
people ought to be prevented from going on to the ice there.
The Coroner said Morton had behaved in a most plucky manner, and he should suggest that the Hum -
-ane Society be communicated with, that his services might again be recognised. The jury said they
should certainly do so. A verdict of “Accidental death” was returned.
Messrs. Tynack, Sons, and Turner request us to state with regard to the Little London Dam, that all the
water used at their works, with the exception of drinking water, is drawn from that dam, so that the depth
of the water is constantly varying, a state of things which render it very unsafe for skating purposes. Not
only are there several water wheels kept working, but the water is also drawn off for many other
purposes.

Ernest Dobson, of Thorpe Hesley, and Joseph Ulley, forkmaker, Shiregreen, were summoned before
Mr. Frank Mappin for using threats towards a gamekeeper named Albert Leese, on the 11th. On the
evening of this day, Leese saw the two men on land near Wooley Wood, over which Mr. T.W. Jeffcock
had the right of shooting. They had a dog with them and, thinking their movements suspicious, Leese
went and forbid them to enter the wood. Both men, Dobson especially, thereupon used violent lang-
-uage towards the keeper. Ulley, who pleaded that he had the right to go into the wood, and who had
not been previously summoned, was discharged, but Dobson, against whom there were 60 previous
convictions of various kinds, was bound over to keep the peace, one month’s imprisonment in default.
Mr. R. Fairburn prosecuted.

1892 02 Mar - Sheffield Independent - EXTENSIVE THEFT OF CUTLERY IN SHEFFIELD.
Yesterday, at the Sheffield Town Hall, before the Stipendiary Magistrate, Kenneth Robson, spring knife
cutler, Leicester street, and George (sic) Hulley, fork maker, Brook lane, were charged with breaking into
the warehouse of Messrs. Stacey Brothers, cutlery manufacturers, on February 5th, and stealing £25
worth of cutlery, and William Steel, describing himself as an auctioneer, Castlefolds lane, was charged
with receiving the property, knowing it to have been stolen. Mr. Arthur Neal, prosecuted; Mr. Muir Wilson
appeared for Hulley, Mr. R. Fairburn defended Steel, but Robson was undefended.
Mr. Neal stated the case on behalf of the prosecution. On the night of February 5th the warehouse of
Messrs. Stacey Brothers was broken into, and a large quantity of cutlery stolen. It appeared that on the
following day Steel went to Derby and offered a considerable amount to an auctioneer, Mr. Joseph
Clark. Mr. Clark ultimately purchased some cutlery, and as it was his custom to attend markets, he sold
some of the knives in the usual way. The police began to make enquiries about the stolen property, and
this evidently reached the ears of Steel, for he went to Clark and manifested uneasiness, saying there
had been something wrong, and that the persons from whom he got the cutlery wanted it back. Mr.
Clark said he was willing to let it go if he was paid. This was not done, and eventually a box containing
a quantity of goods was obtained by Inspector Thompson, from Mr. Clark. Robson had previously
been in the employ of Messrs. Stacey Brothers, and it would be proved that the knives belonged to the
firm, because many of them were of an entirely new pattern, which had never gone out.
Mr. Richard White, a partner of the firm of Stacey Brothers, said that on Friday evening, the 5th February,
he left the works all right. When he returned the next morning he found the warehouse had been
broken into, and pocket knives to the value of about £55 stolen. One the 25th February Inspector
Thompson produced to him 273 knives, which he recognised as the property of his firm. A large
number of knives stolen were of an entirely new pattern, and had never been placed on the market.
Knives to the value of £14. 11s. 9d. had been recovered. Witness knew Robson. He was formerly in
their employ, leaving about last midsummer. In reply to Mr. Wilson, witness said that he had never seen
Hulley about the firms’ premises.
Walter James Millington, clerk to Messrs. Stacey Brothers, stated that he locked up the premise on the
night of February 5th.
Thomas Edwin Naylor, engine tenter in the employ of Messrs. Stacey, deposed that on the morning of
February 6th he found the warehouse door unfastened, and a skeleton key in the lock.
Joseph Clark, auctioneer, 10, Agard street, Derby, said that on the morning of Saturday, February 6th,
he was visited by Steel, who wanted him to buy some knives. He said that he had them at the Durham
Heifer Hotel, the Morledge. They went to the hotel together, and a box containing the knives were
taken to the witness’ house The knives were sorted out, and he paid 3s., 5s., and 7s. a dozen,
according to size. He asked Steel where he got them from, and he said from a little maker in Sheffield
who had the bailiffs in, and wanted some money. The total amount he paid for the cutlery was £14. 6s.
Witness afterwards sold a number of knives by auction at Nottingham.
On a subsequent occasion he met Steel in the street. Steel said that there was some bother about the
cutlery. The man who let him have it wanted it back, or some more money. On another day Robson
and Hulley called upon him. Robson said “Do you know the knives sold to you by Steel were stolen?”
and he replied that he did not. Then he said, “Well, they are mine, and I want them back, or some more
money.” This he refused to do, but as they were hungry he gave them a shilling. Then Steel called
upon him again, and he told him about the two men who had been to him. Steel said their story was
untrue. He, however, wanted the knives back, as some difficulty had arisen, but witness refused.
Cross-examined by Mr. Wilson, witness said that he had previously bought a lot of knives from Steel.
He did not know how many dozen knives he purchased from Steel on February 6th. He should say
there were 50 or 60 dozen. Steel was not a hawker.
Mr. Wilson: You mean to say that you went and bought 50 or 60 dozen new knives from a pot hawker? I
had bought goods from him before.
The public had better be warned against men like you. Don’t you know that the majority of knives were
worth 8s. a dozen, and that some of them were worth 5s. each? No.
How much did you sell them at? - Oh, 2d. or 3d. apiece. The largest price I got for one was 3s.
Now as to the interview between Hulley and Robson and yourself, what was said?
Robson said to me , “I stole the knives, and they didn’t’ belong to Steel.”
Didn’t Hulley say he had only got £4 of the swag? He said he only got £4 as his share.
Didn’t he say to you, “You know they were stolen?” - No.
Didn’t you say, ”If you make a bother I will snitch on you?” No.
What did you say? I said that I didn’t believe anything they said , and that if they did not go away I would
have them locked up.
What did Hulley say? - He wanted to tell me how he broke into a cutlery manufactory, but I did not want
to hear him.
You were rather shocked, and stood aghast at talking to a burglar: I told him I did not want to know
anything about it.
In cross-examination by Mr. Fairburn, witness said that when Steel came to him he said that two men
had brought him the cutlery to sell, but as he had not an auctioneers’ licence he wanted witness to buy it.
Detective Inspector Thompson deposed receiving the cutlery from Mr. Clark on the 25th ult. The same
night he charged Steel at his house. He replied “I have not stolen anything. A man came to me a
fortnight last Saturday, and said he had been recommended to me. He said that his father was a
manufacturer and in difficulties, and wanted to know if I would buy some knives. I said I would not. Then
he asked me if I would sell them in the market , and I promised to sell them. I could not sell them with-
-out an auctioneers licence, but I went to Derby and saw Joseph Clark, who is an auctioneer, and sold
the cutlery to him for £14, 6s. I don’t know the man who brought me the cutlery, but I could tell him if I
saw him. he had a companion. When I came back to Sheffield that night I met the two men at my house,
and give them a bill for what I had sold the knives. They gave me 10s. for my commission.
The following night witness was present when Police-constable Dye arrested Robson. He said nothing in
reply to the charge, but on the way to the cells he said, “I broke into Stacey’s; Hulley was waiting for me
outside. We took the stuff straight to Steel that night. We hadn’t the ……….. stuff 10 minutes. He was
waiting for us. We had arranged to take it there. We got nowt for it.”
Police-constable Dye gave corroborative evidence as to the arrest of Robson.
Detective Wilson deposed to arresting Hulley.
The three prisoners were committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions.
Note: see Ancestry - West Yorkshire, England, Prison Records , 1801-1914. George Hulley was shown
as Joseph Hulley. He was found not guilty of warehouse breaking and stealing; Kenneth Robson was
found guilty of warehouse breaking and stealing therein and sentenced to 12 calendar months; Wm.
Steel was on Bail and did not surrender.

Information obtained from Lucie Hulley (born 1906 died 1999)

Harriet Hulley was her Grandmother who had a lover who died before a child of the union (Frederick) was born in 1868. Frederick married Lucie EA Harris in 1903 and had 5 children, the second of whom was Lucie. Frederick Hulley's birth certificate for 1868 is erroneous. As there were already two Francis Hulleys in the family - father and son - she gave this name as the father and her own mother's maiden name (Rodger) as hers.

Harriet Hulley (b. 1847) went as housekeeper to John Grayson before marrying him in 1872 at Ecclesfield parish church. On their marriage certificate she was shown as aged 27, he was 65. They had three children (John, Colin and Ethel born 1882 at the farm). He was a farmer who owned 'Home Farm' opposite the parish church of Worsborough. Lucie Hulley says that she lived at the farm for about six years until she was eighteen, after the death of her mother. She lived with Colin and his wife, her uncle and aunt. Lucie also says that Frederick had spent many of his early days there, but in the census records of 1871 and 1881Frederick is recorded as being at the cottage of her Gt Grandparents in Nethershire Lane on both occasions, so he may well have lived there for most of his childhood.

John Grayson married Betty Grey, Colin Grayson married Mary Grey (cousin of Betty) and Ethel (known as Ciss) married George Thorpe.

Information obtained from Julia Picton June 2004:-

I am Frederick Hulley's great granddaughter and I have a few things to tell you about Frederick and his children and mother. On the notes for his mother Harriet (98), you need to know that Harriet had Frederick out of wedlock when she was a young woman. His father is unknown. Yes, Lucie may have told you that his father "died", but this was because no-one in the family ever wanted anyone to know, or ever talked openly about, Fred being born out of wedlock and his father being unknown. Harriet did indeed later marry John Grayson with whom she had three children, but it would be really great if you could update your site to say that Frederick was Harriet's son, father: unknown, which is the truth. It is nothing to be ashamed of and I would really appreciate it if you could update your site to show hits! And yes, on the last line of notes Ethel was known to all as "Ciss"; there is no need to have question marks around this.! A couple of other things to tell you about Fred's children: Yvonne was born in Mhow, not Karachi. She married Clifford Eastwood and they had two children, Peter and Michael. The "H N" Jones you refer to in Lucie's notes stands for Herbert Neville Jones. Frederick Joseph Hulley married Gwendoline Richards. They had no children. My grandmother Edna Leontine Hulley was born on 30 JANUARY 1910. Edna married William Hibbert Allanson Picton on 27 August 1937 at West Hoathly in Sussex. They had two children, Jane born 18 February 1940 and Rodney James Frederick born 25 September 1943. Edna died on 12 June 1980 in Sussex. Patricia Hulley was born in Karachi. Thanks for your site and I hope you are able to incorporate the above information.

1875 07 Jan - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - THE FATAL BOILER EXPLOSION IN HOLLIS CROFT.
ADJOURNED INQUEST. (incl.) George Ulley, a fork-maker living in Nottingham street, said he worked
on the premises of Mr. Hides. A week before the explosion Porter said to him that the water was leaking
fast, but he thought it was a jest. The Coroner: But it has not turned out to be in jest. The witness,
continuing, said he was afraid that the boiler would “go,” and he looked out for work at a place in
Hawley croft. He was afraid of himself, and his stock, and his stock was now gone.
He should have been out of the place by Christmas if the explosion had not happened. He had talked of
his fears of the boiler to the men in the yard, but never to Mr. Hides, because he did not know whether it
was his place. He trusted himself in the hands of Mr. Hides and the engine-driver, thought he thought
they knew more about the engine than he did. During the week before the explosion, the state of the
boiler was a subject of general conversation in the yard.
