1848 Mar 18 - Sheffield & Rotherham Independent - Local Intelligence on Saturday Joseph Badger Esq. deputy- Coroner, held an inquest at the Yellow Lion, Greaseborough, on view of the body of John Hulley a farm labourer. The deceased, along with several other persons, were engaged on Thursday week, cutting drains at Barbot Hall. He made no complaint when he went home in the evening, and partook of a hearty meal before retiring to rest. About four o'clock on Friday morning, he awoke with a violent spasmodic pain at the stomach. This continued to increase and on Saturday forenoon he died. The medical testimony attributed his death to spasms of the diaphragm, and a verdict to that effect was recorded.

1867 27 Nov - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - SHEFFIELD TOWN HALL - TUESDAY - Present - W. P. MILNER, W.F.DIXON, J. JEFFCOCK, T.W. RODGERS, and S. ROBERTS, Esqs., and the Rev. T. HAND. RATTENING AT ECCLESFIELD. Benjamin Challoner, of Shire Green, for manufacturer, was summoned by Joseph Hulley, a fork maker, for having, at Ecclesfield, used threatening and intimidating language, to wit, that he would give any amount of money if Hulley's tools could be taken away. Mr Chambers was for the defendant. As the complainant's tools did go away, he took out the present summons against Challoner. He said he had a witness who heard Challoner use the words as alleged, but the witness was not forthcoming. Complainant represented that the witness was afraid to come because he had stolen Something from Mr Challoner. This imputation on the absent witness also turned out to be mere hearsay. There being no evidence against defendant the case was dismissed, Mr Dixon, telling him that he left the court without a stain on his character.

1895 25 Feb - Sheffield Evening Telegraph - SHEFFIELD CITY POLICE - THIS DAY - Before the Stipendiary Magistrate - HUSNBAND AND WIFE IN TROUBLE. George Knutton, ex-warehouseman, and Lucy Knutton, warehouse hand, man and wife, were charged, the woman with stealing, and the man with receiving a number of forks , the property of George Henry Hulley, who carried on business at 17, Cambridge Street, as a cutlery manufacturer, under the style of Hulley and Co. Mr. A. Muir Wilson prosecuted, and stated that the female defendant has for long time been employed by the prosecutor in his warehouse. Considerable quantities of forks have been missed, but it was not until Thursday night last that the police were able to make an arrest. Detective Marr was watching. He saw Mrs. Knutton come from the works of the prosecutor with a parcel, which she handed to her husband. The detective followed him, and eventually stopping him took the parcel from him and found that it contained forks which had been stolen from Mr. Hulley’s place. Both prisoners were arrested. Mr Wilson added that the thefts had been carried out for at last twelve months. There were other charges against the husband - for receiving goods stolen from Mr, Hulley’s works on the 17th and 18th January 1894, and on the 23rd January, 1895. It was discovered that these articles after being stolen were pawned. The male defendant, in defence, said he had been out of work for a long time, and whatever his wife had done, she had done it to keep the home together. Mr Wilson said with regard to the female defendant Mr. Hulley believed she had acted under the dictation of her hus- -band, and he therefore hoped the Stipendiary Magistrate would deal very leniently with her. As to the man it was thought that the justice of the case would not be met by a fine. The male defendant was sentenced to six week’s hard labour, and Mrs. Knutton was bound over to be of good behaviour for six months, her father being surety.
1895 12 Nov - Sheffield Evening Telegraph - AN AFTERNOON OUT AND ITS RESULT The result of staying away from work and having an afternoon out was experienced this morning by John Harris, of 72, Sharrow Lane, a clerk, and Walter Hulley, 14 Bennetts Lane, fork maker, who appeared before the Stipendiary on a charge of stealing a hand-bag, the property of George Wood, paper dealer, 73, Thomas Street. Prosecutor went into the Crown and Anchor public-house, Fitzwilliam Street, yesterday afternoon, and placed a small hand-bag on a shelf while he had a drink. When he wanted it, it had disappeared. Harris and Hulley were drinking in the same room with several other men, and he suspected that they had taken the bag as a joke, but it was not returned to him. It appeared that Hulley subsequently attempted to pledge the bag at the pawnshop of Joseph Shaw, in Button Lane, in the name of Walter Fieldsend, of Sylvester Gardens. He was requested to account for it, and he fetched Harris, who gave the name of John Rogers, to prove the bag was his rightful property. When prisoner was arrested, Hulley admitted taking the bag, and Harris pleaded that he had been “led into it”. It was argued by Mr. A. M. Wilson, on behalf of Harris, that the bag was taken in joke by Hulley, and that Harris, who had gone on the spree that afternoon, was led into the affair. He spoke of Harris’ respectability, and said the charge would lose him his situation. The Stipendiary fined each man 40s. or 18 days’ imprisonment.
