There is also a picture of a Billy Hully of Orton on my Lonsdale Battalion Website (3rd
from the left-the small picture in the bottom is the identified one-from a book about the
Lonsdales - the big pics are just my opinion... Billy Hully of Orton Regards, Spike
(3) BILLY HULLY - he survived the war to return home and marry and have a family.
After the war he worked on the railways and lived in Railway Cottages, Orton Moor. His
distinctive "young man's moustache" marks him out in pictures.

1900 23 Nov - Leeds Mercury - PIGEONS, POULTRY, AND PEOPLE IN ONE HOUSE
At Whitehaven yesterday, John Hully, (56), labourer, and his daughters, Elizabeth and Annie, single
women, of Paston, were each sent to gaol for two months hard labour for wilfully neglecting their
children. The evidence revealed a shocking condition of things. Defendants lived in a five-roomed
house, which was filthy, and seven children, five of whom were illegitimate, the offspring of the female
defendants, all insured, were in an awful condition. The children and women slept in one room, and an
adjoining room was utilised for pigeon and poultry. The Inspector of the National Society said he had
never seen anything to equal such neglect.

1900 23 Nov - Leeds Mercury - PIGEONS, POULTRY, AND PEOPLE IN ONE HOUSE
At Whitehaven yesterday, John Hully, (56), labourer, and his daughters, Elizabeth and Annie, single
women, of Paston, were each sent to gaol for two months hard labour for wilfully neglecting their
children. The evidence revealed a shocking condition of things. Defendants lived in a five-roomed
house, which was filthy, and seven children, five of whom were illegitimate, the offspring of the female
defendants, all insured, were in an awful condition. The children and women slept in one room, and an
adjoining room was utilised for pigeon and poultry. The Inspector of the National Society said he had
never seen anything to equal such neglect.
