2007 5 Feb - information received from Frank Hulley (NZ) about his brother Lumley Alexander
Hulley as put together by Lumley Alexander's son Henry Clifford Hulley.

LUMLEY ALEXANDER HULLEY (1908 - 1974).
The eldest son of Francis Walter Hulley and Louisa Botha born on the farm
"Vaalfontein". Went to school at St. Marks in Mbabane at the time of Bishop Tugman.
Left school during hard times to help support the family.
He worked for the South African Railways Road Motor Transport system in Swaziland
from 1929 to 1953 when he resigned to go farming.
During the Second World War he served with the South African Forces in Egypt. In
1947 he was seconded by the S.A. Railways to the Technical Services Team that
accompanied the Royal Family on their tour of South Africa and the Protectorates.
Whilst he was on Active Service his first wife Driekie and sons (1) Leonard Dugmore
and (2) Henry Clifford lived in Bremersdorp. Driekie worked as a clerk in the R.M.T.
offices and supported herself and the boys. All Lumleys Army and Railway pay was
passed on to his father Francis Walter H. who bought cattle and ran them on his farm
first at "Loch Moy" and later at "Helehele". On his return half of these cattle were sold
and the farm at '"Pondo" was purchased. This was part of the farm "Kelly's Hope" in the
Malkerns district. (3) Richard John was born after the war.
Lumley moved to the farm in 1953. The present homestead was built in 1957. In 1950
two shares were bought in the Malkerns Irrigation Scheme for two thousand pounds.
This scheme was to build a canal to divert 100 cusecs of water from the Usutu River to
the Malkerns Valley. Each share of 1000 pounds purchased one cusec of water
making the total cost of the scheme 100,000 pounds.
Driekie diek in 1959 and is buried in Manzini (formerly Bremersdorp) Lumley married.
Mary Tetluk (nee Struwig) and (4) Mary-Anne was born.
During his time at Malkerns Lumley served in various capacities. He was a very active
Free Mason becoming Master of the Swaziland Lodge in 1970. He was later awarded
District Grand Rank. He belonged to the Manzini MOTH Shellhole and served as Old
Bill. He was an active member of the Rotary Club. He served as committee member of
the Malkerns Country Club, Malkerns Irrigation Scheme, Citrus Grower's Co-op and
Farmer's Association. He represented the Farmer's Association on a Government
Commission of Enquiry into the farm dweller's problems and was a valuable member
because of his knowledge of the Swazi People and their language.
Lumley died in 1974 and is buried in Manzini.
