SouthAfrica01 - Descendants of Richard Hulley who was born Ecclesfield,Yorkshire in 1785

Notes

293. William Luther Hulley

Information received from Susan Hulley-Miller of New Hampshire USA Dec 2003.

A bit more information for you about William Luther Hulley. He was my grandfather. He married Ethel Wigget. My father's name was Horace Hector Herbert Hulley. He had several sisters - Florence, Thora, Millicent, May (not Mary) and Lulu (not sure what her real name was!). I believe he had a brother who died as an infant called James. William and Ethel were divorced at some point (she told my father his father had died, and he did not meet him until he was an adult), and married someone called Henry Miller. My father became known by the last name of Miller, although it was never legally changed. So his marriage certificate says "Hulley known as Miller". To avoid further confusion he registered all his children with the last name of Hulley-Miller. He married Philippa Gwyneth Jones from Cape Town.

My mother Pearl was an afterthought and most of her brothers and sisters had children who were older
than my mother, and set up their own homes in different parts of South Africa. We lived in
Pietermaritzburg and for a short time at Umtentweni (during the war ).
My Jarman grandfather had come out to South Africa as a soldier (2nd Dorsets) during the Boer War and
had stayed on and made his home in Pietermaritzburg.
My mother was born on Esek and as such she came from the “bundu” (sticks - totally remote) Shopping
was once a year, and a bolt of cloth was chosen. This made up teacloths, nightdresses, bonnets,
dresses, table napkins etc until it was finished. Mom said with joy and loathing for all the items made,
but everything could be dated by the pattern on the cloth.
I have photographs - not many. One is of Grandpa Hulley, Ernest Upton and Edgar (his sons). Another
is of Grandpa sitting on a bench with a friend (unidentified) and a dog. Anotheris of my mother’s
grandfather - father of Mary Cavanagh ( who married Ernest Upton Hulley 16 Jan 1886. Grandpa
Cavanagh was a magistrate in Alice (Cape Province) and as such led a small force to help the British
Army during the Boer War. I also have a print of a photograph labelled Mom’s Paternal Grandfather. If
you are interested I will ask my husband to help me send them as computers always go wrong when I
am let loose on them.

2013 15 Mar - information from a restricted source:

If her surname was Dixon in 1936 when her father died (she signed the death notice as Dixon), then the van
Niekerk children born before that date must have been illegitimite, or perhaps a mix-up of names occurred,
or perhaps Dixon children were adopted by her second husband, John van Niekerk. (VW) Why use the
name Dixon in 1936 when she had a van Niekerk child in 1930?

John Colin Campbell ("Sonny) van Niekerk

Information from a restricted source:

He and Gracie had three sons & two dauighters. Collin Campbell "Sonny" van Niekerk (a White Afrikaner)
was a bus driver in the rural village of Harding, Southern Natal. He was a man of fixed principles, very
caring and a good husband, father and grandfather.
