1866 25 Aug - Lancaster Gazette - GREAT YARMOUTH ELECTION COMMISSION - (incl.) William Hully had £15.
1866 08 Oct - Daily News - Great Yarmouth Election Commission - After the dispatch of our parcel on Friday, the first witness examined was William Hulley, a professor of music, who denied that he had received a bribe. If Cooper had said that he gave money to C. Ablitt for him it was untrue. He was employed by Mr Ablett to perform at the Victoria Gardens, and was paid for so doing. He had been engaged for four or five years to perform twice a week. He had a strong band, and was paid half a guinea time as leader of the band, and was also paid for three or four performers. Mr Ablett did not owe him anything now, although he was indebted to a small extent, just before the election. He never told anyone that Mr Ablitt had given him money for his vote. Mr Theobald was his employer for eight or nine months, previous to the election. Mr Ablett having then resigned the gardens for a time. Ablett paid me £10 for the string band, two months before the election. Ablett owed him £15, the balance has since been paid. Witness told Mr Brogden, when that gentleman called upon him, that he should vote for Lacon and Goodson, that he was getting his living by the tory party, and that he dared not do otherwise. He heard through the papers that Ablett had money to give to him. Witness had no particular political opinions, but he should not vote for the Liberals, as his interest did not lay that way. (Laughter.) Charles J. Ablett, proprietor of the Victoria Gardens, said he was not the lessee at the time of the election. When he first held the lessee-ship he owed Hulley £15 8s 6d. He paid him £10 seven or eight weeks before the election, and the balance a short time since. Just before the election witness told Hulley that he should again become lessee of the gardens, and that he should want him to do "something" for him - implying that he wanted him to vote for Lacon and Goodson. The money given by Cooper to witness was for general purposes. He knew Ayers, a photographic artist, but he did not give him any money, nor did he bribe Palmer, a shoemaker, in Howard-st. He took £15 from Cooper for Hulley. He should ultimately have paid Hulley himself, but he took the money, and was therefore the better by that amount. Hulley, on being recalled, said he did not recollect Mr Ablett, telling him that he should require to do “something.". Witness promised Lacon and Goodson at once when they came to him.

1890 07 Jun - Yarmouth Independent PROHIBITED HOURS - George Brown, landlord of the Prince of Wales' Tavern, was summoned for having his house open at prohibited hours. The Town-clerk prosecuted. Detective Lingwood stated that on Sunday morning he, with Sergeant Hubbard, was duty on Regent-road about eleven o'clock. He saw man named William Hulley and stranger leave the Catholic Church and proceed to defendant’s house. Witness followed and saw them go through defendant's stables into a room at the back of the bar. Witness went after them and looked through the doorway and saw a woman named Westgate sitting at a table drinking ale. Mrs Brown then handed two glasses of ale to the two men, and the stranger was going to pay when the coin fell from his hand on to the floor. Witness and Hubbard then went in and told defendant, who came from his stables, that they should report him. He said he hoped they would not do so. Mrs Westgate said she pleaded guilty at once, as she could not do otherwise. Hulley said he came to get a bed for his friend, who had come from Lynn to sing in the choir. Hubbard corroborated. Defendant admitted the offence, but pleaded extenuating circumstances. HE DIDN'T LIKE BEER! William Hulley and Susannah Westgate were then summoned for being in the house at prohibited hours. Hulley said he never had anything to drink, although the beer was fetched. He did not like beer. [Laughter.] Mrs Westgate said she was friendly with defendant, and although she was drinking the ale, it was a glass which had been given her. The Bench administered a caution to Brown, and fined him 20s and costs. Hulley was fined 6s and costs, and as there was a reasonable doubt Westgate’s case, it would be dismissed. Hulley again protested he did not have anything.

(Undated) - Extract from book on St Marys Church Great Yarmouth Norfolk by I St Lawrence SJ
For it’s first 50 years at least St Mary,s had the good fortune to have the services of the most musical of families. The Hulleys. Mr William Hulley who married Mary Ann Cubitt of Great Yarmouth, was with his family received into the church by Father Lopez in 1846 and for many years after had charge of the choir or organ. He was by profession a music teacher, and several of his family gave their lives to music, both in the church and town. William Hulley junior later succeeded his father as organist before taking up a similar post in Swansea. Bernard Hulley was organist from 1885.: Father Alfred Hulley SJ (1855-1922) was for most of his priestly life in charge of the choir in various Jesuit parishes, such as Wakefield, Bristol and Clitheroe, with success enough to earn this encomium after his death: “to say he lived for music would be to commit the unpardonable sin by forgetting his life and work for his Church, but one can say that Father Hulley had a passion for his music and that the passion was consecrated to his greater love, the Church”. It may be presumed that the Misses Hulley (there were 8 sisters and 8 brothers in the family) were not behind their brothers in lending their talents to the Church. Miss C Hulley was solo pianist at the Aquarium and Bernard was a solo flautist towards the end of the 80s”.
Another sentence talks of Bernard getting a diamond ring at the same time that an organ is presented to the church by a Mrs Bowen.

1889 28 Sep - Cheshire Observer - ROMAN CATHOLIC ORDINATION IN FLINTSHIRE - Large numbers of persons have this week been attracted to St. Beuno’s Theological College at Tremeirchion, near St. Asaph, to witness the ordination of twelve students to the Roman Catholic priesthood. The officiating prelate was the Right Rev. Dr. Knight, Bishop of Shrewsbury, and was assisted as archdeacon by the Very Rev. J. Clayton, the Provincial of the Society of Jesus in England. At the first assembly the minor orders were conferred upon the Rev. E. Rigby and Rev E. Blount, and the following were raised to the sub-deaconate: (incl.) A. Hulley. The sub-deacons were admitted to the full order of deacons on the following day, and the admission of the twelve deacons to the priesthood took place on the third day in the College Chapel, which was filled by the relatives and friends of those about to be ordained. The imposing ceremony occupied several hours, amongst the impressive parts being the imposition of hands by the Bishop and some fathers of the College, and also the anointing of their hands during the singing of the hymn “Veni Creator Spiritus.” The parts of the Mass which followed were said in common by the Bishop and the newly-ordained priests. The “Hallelujah Chorus” was sung as the procession left the church, and the newly appointed priests gave their blessing, and their hands were kissed by their religious brethren, by their relatives and friends, and by the rest of the congregation, Pope Leo XIII sent by Mr. Francis O’Gorman, one of his chamberlains and brother of one of the newly- ordained priests, his special blessing to all the new fathers.

CATHOLIC RE-UNION AND PRESENTATION TO REV. FATHER HULLEY S.J. On Wednesday night St. Austin's schoolroom was packed by members of the Roman Catholic congregation at an excellent concert arranged for in aid of the day schools. and a great attraction was the announcement that during an interval between the parts of the programme the Young Men's Society would make a presentation to their late chaplain, the Rev. A. Hulley who removed to Bristol a few months ago. Father Hulley, as a skilful musician during his five years' ministry here. took a leading part in the musical work of his church and the entertainments given in connection with it, and his genial spirit won him the good opinion of all who knew him. So that it is not surprising he should have received many presents from the different organisations of the church on leaving. These. included a complete portmanteau from the school children, " the children of Mary" gave him some vestments, and, besides other gifts, on Wednesday the young men presented him with the breviary in four handsomely-bound and gilt-edged volumes, while the choir's gift was a box of razors. etc. When this interesting part of the proceedings was reached the officiating priests of the church came opon the artistically decorated platform, with Father Hulley, and a number of the committee of the Young Men's Society, who were decked in blue sashes.
In taking the chair Father Moore (the rector) made a capital and racy speech. He thanked them all for making that re-union of the congregation such a brilliant success. They came there to make .a loyal and loving testimony to one who held a warm place in their hearts, the Rev Arthur Hulley (cheers). Irish hearts were 'grateful hearts, and to one who had shared their joys and sorrows for five years and who had ministered to them as a priest, they felt particularly grateful. A priest more devoted to his work than Father Hulley the Chairman had never known. He had never spared himself, but laboured amongst them with the greatest zeal and ability. On account of his failing health he had to remove, leaving an aching heart in everyone in the congregation, but their loss was Bristol's gain. None missed him more than the presbytery, because he was felt by his colleagues to be a dear faithful friend and such a cheerful companion (cheers). But there was a discordant note in the music on this occasion. It was a pretty picture, and pictures were made up of light and shade. What was there shady In Father Hulley? (laughter), Before becoming a priest he (the Chairman) used to study the spots in the sun. What wonder if there spots even in Father Hulley (renewed laughter). He (the Chairman) had had his suspicions before his friend left the city of something. Father Hulley had been chaplain at the Prison. He did not know if that accounted for this trait in his character which he discovered but the fact was that Father Hulley was a thief, and on a large scale, for he had stolen and taken away with him to Bristol the heart of every man, woman, and child in their communion in Wakefield (roars of laughter). However. if he (the Chairman) went on much longer indulging in an old man's garrulity the members of the Young Men's Society would be saying. "When will that old duffer stop" (renewed laughter), so he would give way to Mr Peter Devine, the president of the society, to make the first presentation.
This Mr Devine did in a neat little speech, asking the recipient of the breviary, in using the office to remember the givers in his daily prayers. The speaker mentioned that Father Hulley had been the means of making the monthly communications of the members of the society equal to any in Great Britain. and it was likely to be maintained. Father Moss then handed Father Hulley the box of shaving tackle. In acknowledging these testimonials Father Hulley promised never to forget the givers in his prayers, and said that although, like the founder of the Society of Jesus. to which he belonged, he was a little man. he had a heart that was big enough to hold them all, and he should never cease to love the members of his old flock. Father Moore knew his tender part when he asked him to come and take part in a service at the church on behalf of that school, for he loved the dear little ones much, and should value their gifts not a little. The speaker resumed his seat amidst loud applause. The choir sang four glees, conducted by Father Moss and Father Hulley played violin obbligatos with Miss Jagger at the piano. Mr Hulley played a solo on the flute and sang a song. "Mrs Magrath" which was and there were several encores during the evening.
1898 10 May - Bristol Mercury Sudden Death of Dr. Saunders incl. In a few minutes, however, he complained of a pain near his heart, and then he left the hall and walked with Father Hulley to the Presbytery in Trenchard street etc.
1898 22 Aug - Dundee Courier - St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Chapel - The ceremony of blessing and dedicating the bell intended for use in St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Chapel, Dundee, at present in course of erection, and a statue of St. Patrick which is to occupy a niche in the chapel, took place on Saturday afternoon. The ceremony was performed by the Right Rev. Dr. Smith, Bishop of the Diocese of Dunkeld. He was assisted by the Very Rev. Canon Butti and the Rev. Fathers M’Daniel, Cleary, M’Millan and Hulley.
1898 25 Oct - Bristol Mercury and Daily Post - St. Mary’s-on-the-Quay - Father Hulley, S.J., who made the presentation, mentioned that Mr Mundy had rendered valuable assistance.
