2007 Jul 24 - information received from Pam Dale of Brisbane, Australia.

Hello Ray
I thought you might like to have this for your records. This article that I wrote was
published in the July issue of Australian Family Tree Connections which is probably the
only family history magazine published here in Australia.
Cheers

Subject: PIONEERS OF FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND
I was thrilled and interested to read in the June 2007 issue the article by Marion
Alexander titled Pioneers of Far North Queensland. My Great Grandparents George
Henry COOPER (born 1848 in Hackney, London) & Eliza PIKE (born 1849 also
Hackney) and their firstborn Eliza Mary (born in Jersey where they were teaching) were
passengers on that fateful trip of the "Countess Russell". They disembarked in
Rockhampton after a harrowing journey from London. George and Eliza were both
trained school teachers and George was sent out to the Colony by the Agent General to
teach in Queensland. After their initial posting to schools in Rockhampton, they both
taught in many remote areas of Queensland. Their teaching records are at the Qld
State Archives.
George and Eliza had a total of 8 children, one of whom died at Gravesend just before
they sailed. I can only wonder at the resilience of Eliza looking after all those children
while teaching and doing her own sewing etc, often in primitive conditions. At the State
Archives there are a few hundred pages of her letters to the Qld Education Department,
often complaining of the conditions at the school and school house and her errant
husband. Some of their children also became teachers. My grandmother was Maud
Clara COOPER who married Joseph James COOPER at Harrison's Pocket, now
underwater (or should be if we weren't in drought) at Lake Samsonvale, near Petrie,
north of Brisbane. There are many descendents of George & Eliza, mostly in the
Brisbane area. Others have been found in New South Wales, Victoria and South
Australia.
George died in 1929 and is buried in Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane. His wife Eliza is
buried in Warwick Qld, where she died in 1917 while he was teaching at Emu Vale, a
tiny town near Warwick. George had retired from teaching in 1903 but returned to
teach at Emu Vale during WW1, The previous headmaster had fallen in a creek and
drowned on the way home from the hotel. It is believed that, as most of the men had
gone to war, George was recruited to teach again.
About a month ago I visited 1770 and Agnes Waters and took a photo of the anchor of
the "Countess Russell". The museum at Agnes Waters has some relics from the wreck
and a story of the disaster and subsequent enquiry. I do have a copy, from the internet,
of John Carkeet's diary of this last journey and have transcribed it, originally to give to
my siblings and other descendents. I have recently forwarded a copy to the Agnes
Waters museum for their records.
Keep up the good work with these interesting stories. If there are any descendents that
I have not yet found, I would love to hear from you.
