2016 06 Dec - Guestbook Entry from John Roberts of New York:
Searching for information on Henry Hulley, artist and engraver, solely noted for a folio entitled 'Somer's
Cocks'. He hailed from Devon and did an aquatint of Honore Fort in India c. 1783. I want to give him a
bio in my forthcoming book on E.I.C artists in India. It is suggested that he emigrated to South Africa?

2016 07 Dec - reply to above: Hello John
I'm not sure that I will be able to help you track down Henry Hulley. I have no record of any male Hulley
coming from Devon - almost all families came from northern counties, the midlands or London.

The only possibility that I have found is a HARRY Hulley who is listed on the London 02 Family Tree.
He was born in London in 1759 and died in Bath in 1831. He was an artist and exhibited at the Royal
Academy of Arts between 1783 and 1787. His Notes list all the information that I have researched on
him. It is quite feasible that he was also known as Harry - this was an accepted variant of Henry and is
still one ie Prince Harry was born a Henry.

Unfortunately his ancestors have only been taken back one generation at this stage, and I have yet to
discover the ancestors of his father Thomas. I'm sorry that I can't be more positive; if you consider that
he is the same person as the one you have described, and have any other information about him, I'll
add it to his Notes in London 02.
Best wishes
Ray

2016 08 Dec - reply to above: Greetings Ray,
Thanks for the effort. I think that's him exactly because the dates fit with the one work of art I have been
able to establish - his aquatint view of Onore (Honovar) hill fort in India - 1783 after an oil of the same.
It doesn't mean that he actually travelled to India because at this time - the Mysore Wars - it had become
an established practice 'at home' for artists, engravers & lithographers to elaborate the drawings and
water-colors of the surveyors who traveled with the army - a very popular market. There is one
additional reference to him - a folio of 118 items commissioned (or dedicated) to the first Baron
Somers Cock in 1801. This is listed on the Devon County Council page, 'Etched in Devon's Memory' -
they have only the reference not the actual folio. I will see if the R.A.A. has any more information on
him from their catalogue of exhibited works. He is not listed in Hermoine Alameida's exhaustive study
of British Artists in India., I am researching for a book - "The Company School' - that will trace the art
back to the surveyors. I'm happy to include him with the image and will send you any additional
information I may find, As to his father - there are the early city directories - if you can find a London
address, you can find the parish - and parish records go quite far back.
Many Thanks,
John
