2009 xx Oct - Additional Notes from Nick Shelley From when he retired to live with Joan Sanderson's mother, it is known that Charles was living at Oldham, Manchester, Lancs, with May Lucy Ethel Hulley around after 1908.
His granddaughter Joan has recalled that after 1908 "he was quite a character; a lovely man who went to church every Sunday with his ebony walking stick". He had the equivalent of a modern transport business. He had waggons and horses and several drivers. He transported coal etc along the Midlands Canal. He used to lead his waggons to the church for Sunday School outings. The waggons were covered with white sheets and forms were placed on top of wagons. This was at Erdington Parish Church; I think it was called St Matthews".
When his daughter Phyllis Eva was married on 23 Jun 1908 Charles' occupation was recorded in the marriage register as that of retired.
He was a guest at the wedding of Albert Folland and May Lucy Ethel Hulley which was held at St Michael's Parish Church, Birmingham in Warks on 28 Jul 1909. Charles' occupation was recorded in the marriage register as that of being retired.
Charles was living at "The Gables", Court Lane, Erdington, Birmingham, Warks, around 1913.
In a probate document Charles was described between 1914 and 1915 as the district secretary of The Equalised District Order of Druids (approved society No. 135) of 23 Ryder Street, Birmingham.
Charles was living at 180 Short Heath Road, Erdington, Warks, around between 1914 and 1915.
His grandson Kevin has recalled that circa 1915 if you listened to the Hulleys, a lot of their conversation centred around Aston Villa, St Matthews Church in Aston and Joseph Chamberlain
He took on the role of one of the formal witnesses when Charles Edward Jenks married his daughter Dorothy Beatrice Hulley at St Michael's Church, Boldmere, in Wylde Green, Warks on 31 Jul 1915.
He was a guest at the wedding of Daniel Rhoe O'Donovan (526) and Hilda Callis Hulley which was held at St Michael's Parish Church, Hall Green, Birmingham in Warks on 19 Oct 1915. Charles' occupation was recorded in the marriage register as that of a retired coal merchant.
Joan has recalled that 1925 "after grandmother (Mary Elizabeth) died, Grandpa came to live with us first in Oldham, then in Low Fell, Co. Durham. He died about 1932 or 1933. Auntie Edie made Grandpa a monthly allowance until he died"
It is known that his wife Polly died on 24 Oct 1925. Charles was aged 78. She was 76.,
At the age of 85 Chas died at Low Fell, Gateshead, Co. Durham, on 9 Jan 1933. The death certificate gave the cause of death as myocardial degeneration & senility. There was no post mortem. At the time of his death his occupation was described as that of a retired coal merchant. Formally recorded as being present at his death was his daughter May. No will has been found.,,
He was buried at St Barnabas Church, Erdington, Birmingham, Warks, in 1933 "aged 85 years." At St Barnabas Church, Erdington, Birmingham, Warks, Charles was remembered on the memorial stone found there:
In loving memory of Mary Elizabeth the dearly loved wife of Charles Frederick Hulley, who fell asleep Oct. 24th 1925, aged 76 years. Blessed are the pure in heart. Also in memory of Charles Frederick Hulley, who passed away Jan 9th 1933, aged 85 years.

(undated) Eric Shelley, letter to Joan Sanderson "My dear Joan, Thank you for writing such a sweet letter. I know how difficult it is. Audrey wrote also. Will you please send her the enclosed reply because I have to confess being unable to remember her married name. I have no feeling of grief but only of sadness because mother had reached a time when the future held nothing in store for her & nature was gently letting her get pleasure from the memories of her younger days. Mother had stated her wish to be cremated & so it was at 11 am on Saturday that Ken & I attended a simple service in the Crematorium Chapel. Small but bright, clean colours & light woodwork everywhere. Thank you very much for sending flowers. We asked that they should later be sent to the old peoples' homes rather than to the hospital which gets so many flowers. Ken seemed much better in health than when we last met (which is a very good thing). Dob had asked Kay & I & Ken to stay at Brookhill & Diana was there until yesterday when Dob took her to London Airport. Diana will now be well on the way to joining Jimmy in Malta. With love Eric

NORTON - One of the great marques, Norton was founded as a bicycle components company in 1898 by James Landsdowne Norton, who first manufactured a powered bike in 1901 (1902?) using his own frame and a French Clement engine. Norton's reputation as a superior machine was gained through its early successes on the race track. A Norton powered by a V-twin Peugot engine won the very first TT race in 1907. In 1908, Norton started making its own engines (a 4bhp 633c side-valve single called the Big Four) and made its first ohv singles in 1922, starting with the Model 18 which proved a successful race winner. Norton made its first parallel twin in 1948. James Norton raced in the TT himself, unsuccessfully on his new 494cc model, in 1909, 10 and 11. Norton went into liquidation in 1913 while its owner recovered from an illness contracted on the Isle of Man, but a new company, Norton Motors Ltd. was formed shortly after with Norton and BOB SHELLEY, using the services of Dan "Wizard" O'Donovan, racer and master tuner. They soon built the world's first production racing bike, the BRS, or Brooklands Racing Special, as well as a slightly slower BS, Brooklands Special. Not large enough for wartime production levels, Norton managed to obtain a small contract to provides bikes for the Russian army in WW1. After WW1, the company returned to civilian production, and Norton developed a number of innovations, including a desmodromic valve system, although he opted for another design using overhead valves for production. Norton bikes were entered in several TT races in this time, with some successes in 1923, 24. Norton died in 1925 at only 56 years old. By then he had built a reputation for fast, reliable bikes. Walter Moore, its other major designer, left for NSU in 1929 after designing the CS1 (Cam Shaft 1), which won the TT race.

1913 Bettmann is elected Mayor of Coventry 1913-14. As mayor, he established the charitable Prince of Wales Fund. He was also a founding member and former president of the Coventry Chamber of Commerce and president of the Coventry Liberal Association (until 1940). Triumph (Schulte) builds an experimental 600cc vertical twin side-valve engine, with horizontal crankcase joint (horizontally split crankcases would not reappear until the late 1950s). Model C is the last one offered with a pedal start. Two stroke, two speed, two-stroke 225cc 'Junior' model designed by Hathaway specifically for women is announced. It has a top speed of 35 mph. Public calls it the "Baby Triumph." It's the first new Triumph engine since 1910. For a brief while (1916-20), Ignatz Schwinn, of Chicago, manufactures the Junior under license in the USA (as Excelsior), upgrading the engine to 269cc. Veloce <../britbikes/brit_v.html> makes its first two-stroke motorcycle, the Velocette. The name sticks and the company is called that afterwards. First roadside petrol pump built in the UK, in Shrewsbury. Norton is in voluntary liquidation, but James Norton reforms it with BOB SHELLEY as Norton Motors Ltd. Villiers starts making its first production engine. Pierce Cycle Company (USA) in liquidation, production ends.100,000 motorcycles registered in England, 70,000 motorcycles were manufactured in the USA. First motorcar to exceed 100 mph. A V-twin NUT using a 350cc JAP engine wins the IOM Junior TT race.
Extract from "Blue Goose Riders".
Based at Brooklands, James Norton, BOB SHELLEY and racer/tuner, Dan O’Donovan formed Norton Motors Ltd. O’Donovan developed the 490cc BS (Brooklands Special), the world’s first production racing bike. In the 1920s, Norton converted the single-cylinder engine to overhead valve operation, producing the Model 18 roadster. Just seven years later, the firm introduced another technical advance with the CS1, which featured an overhead camshaft.
