1899 13 Oct - Whitby Gazette - ROBBED IN THE STRAND - Mary Mack, twenty-five, was charged at Bow-street Police- court, London, on Monday with stealing a gold seal, value 25s., from Mr. Walter Hulley, a manufacturer of cotton goods, of Marsden -square, Manchester. Mr. Hulley said that at 11.20 on Sunday night the prisoner accosted him in the Strand, and, though he told her to go away, persisted in following him. At last he gave her a shilling to get rid of her, and immediately afterwards felt a tug at his watch chain, and found that the seal which hung from it had gone. Turning, he saw the prisoner handing her umbrella to another girl, who at once ran off. He stopped the prisoner, and gave her into custody for the theft, though she declared that it was the other girl who had taken the seal, and offered to get it back for him. Mr. Marsham Said that he did not doubt that the prisoner stole the seal and handed it to the other girl, and sentenced her to twenty-one days’ hard labour. (Also in the Heywood Advertiser 13 Oct 1899.)

1896 - lived at 213 King Street, Dukinfield.
2004 18 Mar - Information from Rita Eden: On 13th December 1894 Elizabeth married Edward Wright and they went to live at 16 Surrey Street. In 1896 Elizabeth and Edward went to live at 213 King Street, later to be renamed Kings Road. Elizabeth was to live in this house for a total of 67 years. Edward and Elizabeth had five children. Elizabeth was widowed when Edward died in 1912 at the age of 39 years. Elizabeth was then a single mother with five children in a two-up two-down terraced house with coal fire, gas mantles, outside toilet and a tin bath. For her 80th birthday her grandson Raymond bought her a two-tiered birthday cake and a black and white television set. Elizabeth died in 1963, just a few months before her 90th birthday; she is buried at Hurst Cemetery with her husband Edward and their daughter Ruth. As a child I lived at 213 Kings Road : in the household were Elizabeth Hannah, her daughter Ruth, her grandson Raymond, 3 of her great-grandchildren, including myself. It was still a 2 up 2 down with an outside toilet in the early 1960's. We used a commode in the night! Her grandson / my father Raymond, my sister and I still live within walking distance of Hurst and the place where our ancestors once lived.
Ernest worked at Whitakers mill in Hurst Cross, where his two sons, Enos and Herbert, were little piecers. Enos at one time worked at Blackpool Tower as a musician, married but had no children, Herbert never married. A musician he joined the Carl Rosa Opera Company and then disappeared for over 10 Years. His sister Elizabeth Hannah paid a private detective to find him. He was found In a Salvation Army hostel with £20 in his pocket. Elizabeth married Edward Wright. Later in life her mother-in-law Sophia Wright (nee Hall) married Ernest Hulley. The 1901 census shows Sophia Hulley living at 2 Surrey Street with Sophia's two daughters by her first marriage and Ernest's two daughters by his first marriage.

Somehow, I am not quite sure how yet , we are related to Neddy Hall who had the first cotton mill in Lancashire (known as the Soot Poke) and the first mill with steam power. I was most pleased to find so many Hulley's connected to Moss de Lee as well as the Hall's.

1901 16 Feb - On 16th. February 1901 William Wildgoose, landlord of the Newmarket Tavern, Dukinfield, was in court for selling intoxicating liquor during prohibited hours. Inspector Dutton and Constable Broome had been at the kitchen window of the pub in the early hours of the morning and had heard the voices of three or four men.
"After waiting a minute or two, he (the inspector) knocked at the side door and did not get any answer. He waited a little while and then knocked again and there was some shuffling in the room, but there was no answer. He sent Constable Broome round to the back door and after giving him time to get there, he knocked again much louder.
"He rattled the door latch, knocked again and heard someone come downstairs. He recognised the voice of Mrs Wildgoose in the kitchen and heard her say: ‘You are caught! You are caught! Whatever shall we do?’ There was also the sound of glasses being carried into the bar."
The door was finally opened and he found three men — Tom Madley, Joseph Horrocks and William Greenwood. There were glasses in the bar with the remains of beer and he also noticed that Wildgoose was drunk. The men claimed that they had arrived only minutes before the knock on the door and had not had chance to have a drink. Even so, they were fined 2s 6d without costs, while the landlord was fined 5s with costs.

2009 15 Mar - Message from Rita Vaughan Hi Ray This morning I have found in St Georges Church in Mossley a marble Roll of Honour which was originally in St Augustines Church, Hartshead, Ashton-under-Lyne. This Roll of Honour names Thomas Hulley on it. This I believe is : Thomas Hulley 574 ( Enos Hulley , Cornelius Hulley, James Hulley , Robert Hulley , Mary Hully , James Hulley , Robert Hulley , William Hulley, Robart Hullie. ) During the 1914 -1918 war Private Thomas Hulley ,17725, Kings Own Royal Lancashire Regiment, was living at The Tannery, Lily Lane, Hartshead , Ashton-under-Lyne. The nearest church was St Augustines, Lily Lane, Harsthead, Ashton-under-Lyne. St Augustines was the smallest church in the Manchester Diocese. The church was closed some time ago and is now a private house. However the Roll of Honour was moved to St George's Church in Mossley. The Roll of Honour states:" This Roll of Honour is Erected to …..Glory of God and ……For the Safe Return of the following scholars of this school who served in the Great War 1914-1919" There are 26 names upon this marble Roll of Honour including that of Thomas Hulley.

2009 Jan 26 - Message from Rita Vaughan (rita.vaughan@btinternet.com) Whilst researching information on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site I found the following of interest: RE: JAMES HULLEY (579) (James, Abel, Cornelius, James, Robert, Mary, James, Robert, William, Robart). GUNNER JAMES HULLEY ,165605, 180th Siege Bty., Royal Garrison Artillery, who died age 29 on 26 March 1918, was the Son of Abel and Jane Hulley, of 32, George St., Hurst, Ashton-under-Lyne; husband of Mary Jane Hulley, of 47, Holden St., Ashton- under-Lyne. He is buried in OAK DUMP CEMETERY, Belgium, Grave Ref: D. 1A/7A. It is interesting to note that on 26 March 1918 a sap opposite the cemetery was blown in, and seven men of the 180th Siege Battery were killed. Their bodies were found in 1927 and buried in the cemetery. One of the seven men was GUNNER JAMES HULLEY. Source: CWGC.
Yours sincerely Rita Vaughan (second cousin three times removed to Gunner James Hulley.)

2009 May 22 - information from Rita Vaughan of Mossley, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancs.
THE ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE REPORTER, SATURDAY 6TH APRIL 1918, A LOCAL FOOTBALLER, Popular With All His Comrades. Mrs Hulley, who resides at Holden Street, Hurst, has received a letter from Major H Scovil that her husband, James Hulley, has been killed. The enemy started shelling them with his heavy howitzers, and one shell landed on top of the bank and blew in the sap in which they lived, killing six of his comrades also. Major Scovil states that owing to his special knowledge of infantry work Hulley was put in charge of a Lewis machine gun, and only two days before he had driven an enemy aeroplane back by his splendid shooting. He was exceedingly popular with all his comrades, who join in expressing their deep sympathy; as he could always be depended on to do his duty. Hulley was prominent as a footballer, having assisted Hurst St Johns to win the Hooley Hill SS League and Cup. He also played for Dukinfield St Marks. He then threw in his lot with Hurst Reserve, and helped them to capture the local Charity Cup. Last season he played splendidly for New Moss Colliery, rarely a week passing by without him finding the net from outside left and he was rewarded with a place in the Rest v Champions game at Old Trafford.
