2003 Oct - Information from Janet Lyon nee Hulley The Wright St address comes from the CWGC site. Silvester's address was given as 1 Wright St, Bolton Rd, Radcliffe for son Charles Edward Hulley's entry so the house would have been built by 1916. Wright St, according to my 1927 Radcliffe map left Bolton Rd at the other side of the Turf Hotel and there were just three terraced houses on the left hand side in the whole street. It's on the left of the pub as you look at it from the main road, whilst Turf St was at the other side of the pub. Auntie Elsie said that Silvester had a pie/cook shop near the Turf Hotel but exactly when or where that was I don't know - could have been the Wright St address. He must have been alive at the 1891 & 1901 so unless he's gone abroad or was in prison I don't think he'll be found much further afield than Radcliffe and he was definitely still alive in 1916. So where was he? Do we know about his children? I have possibly four children from his first marriage - Alfred Bradshaw (1877), Sarah Ellen (1879, Charles Edward (1882 and Mabel (1885). What about any children from his second marriage - are you aware of any? If there were any children from this marriage a certificate would bring us a bit closer to 1891. Also, what about a death certificate for Silvester or his second wife, Elizabeth? I must admit that I haven't looked too closely on this. My mother remembers that a Mrs Hardman nee Isherwood (who bought my house at 82 Knowles St in 1974) was related to the Hulleys through Silvester. Quite how I don't know.
Just a few thoughts on how we might possibly capture our elusive relative !!!

1978 15 Mar - information from Doris Hulley (nee Harrison) second wife of George Stanley Hulley: Franklin Hulley (father). he was a loom overlooker and at one time worked for John Hoyles's of Park St Radcliffe. He also did some insurance collecting at some time. They must have lived at 106 Water St, in 1899 when your grandfather was 16. I have heard him say that he used to stand on a buffet at the age of four to wash socks in a dolly tub. They lived at the shop then. They later lived in Spring Lane just past the Sandbanks, now Festival Gardens. I can remember them having a confectioners shop near the Church Green (now demolished). The only other residence that I can remember was 288 Bolton Road Radcliffe.
Note by Ray Hulley: This shop was at no.74 Bury Street, 2 doors away from no. 70 Bury St where Olwen, Syd, Freda and Ray lived from May 1948. Freda married in 1958 and lived in Withins Street, , Ray married in 1961 and lived in no. 68 Bury Street until 1865, and Syd married in 1863 and lived in Dumers Lane. 1n 1970, 70 Bury Street was declared unfit by Radcliffe Borough Council and Olwen moved into a council flat in Milton Road.
Franklin Hulley was for some time choir master at St Andrews' church Radcliffe. From there he went to be choir master at Radcliffe Parish Church. That was in the days when they had choir masters and organists as well. He married someone called Groves from Ainsworth. There are family graves of that name in Ainsworth Church yard. I seem to have heard it said that she married beneath her! The Hulley grave is in St Andrew's churchyard so I will have a walk up when we get a nice day and write down what is on the headstone. Children:- Evelyn Gertrude Franklin April 1st 1882 George Stanley Nov. 10th 1883 - Jan 29th 1951 Albert Edward Edith who was twin to Percy (died at birth I think) Dates of birth etc., will be on the gravestone (some of them anyway) *END*
