1851 16 Aug - The Manchester Guardian:DISTRICT NEWS - ASHTON UNDER LYNE. - COWARDLY ASSAULT.-At the petty sessions, on Wednesday, James Greenwood, a labouring man, charged James Taylor, William Hully, Samuel Seymour, and John Seymour; with having violently assaulted him on the highway, at Hurst. Mr. Brookes appeared to support the complaint, and Mr. F. Heginbottom for the defence. It appeared from the evidence that the complainant was passing along the road, at Hurst, at about eleven o’clock on Saturday night last, and that he perceived two of the defendants fighting or wrestling on the road side. On his coming up they seized him, threw him into the hedge, and afterwards beat him severely, the three other defendants returning to assist them. Taylor, who had taken the most active part In the assault, was fined 20s. and costs, and the other defendants were fined 10s each, with costs.

John Mulley of Dransfields, beerhouse keeper, committed suicide on Friday morning week, by drowning himself in Chadwick's Dam. He had attempted to commit suicide before, and a verdict of temporary insanity was passed.
