1876 19 Jun - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - LOCAL INTELLIGENCE - AN INGENIOUS THIEF. On Saturday night, as a boy named Thomas M’Gowen was walking along Thomas street, he was persuaded by a stranger, named George Ulley, to enter a passage and take off his boots, the stranger kindly promising to get them cleaned for him. The boy, never suspecting that Ulley was a thief, allowed him to take the boots away, and waited patiently for some time, expecting to see them returned in a bright and polished state, but Ulley did not make his appearance in the entry again, and on enquiries being made it was discovered that he had pledged the boots at a shop in Devonshire street for 2s. At seven o’clock yesterday morning the man was apprehended at a house in West John street, and did not deny the theft, which he seemed to think had been rather cleverly done.
1876 20 Jun - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - SHEFFIELD TOWN HALL - THE INGENIOUS THEFT OF A BOY A youth named George Ulley, who lives in West John street, was charged with having stolen a pair of boots from James M’Gowan, who lives in the same street. On Saturday evening the prisoner persuaded the boy to go into a passage and take his boots off, and he (the prisoner) would get them cleaned. He took the boots away with him, but did not return, and it was subsequently ascertained that he had pawned them. He was committed to Wakefield for one month, with hard labour. (also in 24 June Edition).
1876 24 Oct - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - SHEFIELD TOWN HALL - MONDAY, Before the STIPENDARY MAGISTRATE - CHILD STRIPPING IN SHEFFIELD A youth named George Hulley, who lives in Button lane, was brought up on several charges of having stolen clothes from children. In most of the cases he took the children's boots, but in others he took waistcoats and other articles. He was eventually apprehended by Detective-officer Kemp, and now pleaded guilty to all the charges. The property was all recovered from the shop of Mr Lee, pawnbroker, Button lane, where the prisoner had pledged it. He had made 18 pledges of children's wearing apparel in three weeks at the same shop, and although Mr Lee received 14 notices, respecting the article, he had given no information to the police. The prisoner was sent to Wakefield for nine months, with hard labour. The magistrates directed that no costs should be allowed to Mr Lee.
1878 05 Aug - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - A CHIMNEY SWEEP CHARGED WITH HEFT George Hulley, chimney sweep, living in St. Thomas street,, was charged with stealing a metal pan, value 20s., the property of George Cockayne, filesmith, Sandygate. Mrs. Cockayne, wife of the prosecutor, deposed to seeing the prisoner take the pan, which was standing in her garden, at an early hour yesterday morning. It was proved that he subsequently sold it to a man named Jones, a metal dealer, for 2s. 4d. The prisoner, who said the pan was given to him, was committed for trial at the sessions, and Jones was cautioned by the bench that he was liable to a penalty of £5 for buying new metal in such a quantity.

1899 21 Mar - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - SECOND COURT - Before Major W.G. Blake, and Mr. Arthur Wightman. AN ANNOYING CUSTOM. - Passengers in the tramway cars are often annoyed by the refusal of the drivers of carts to clear off the lines, and there was a case in this court this morning which will act as a salutary warning. William Henry Hulley, joiner, 429, Penistone road, was summoned for obstructing a tramcar on 12th February. Mr. G.T. Battams, from the Town Clerk’s Department, prosecuted. The driver of a Hillsboro’ car noticed the defendant’s light cart, which was loaded with pieces of timber, on the lines in front. The cart stopped opposite the Infirmary gates, and the defendant unloaded four pieces of timber. The conductor went to him and asked him to move the cart out of the way, so that the tram could pass. He amiably replied, “Let ‘em wait.” The tram was delayed for about five minutes. After a while the defend- -ant looked out of a window and told the boy to go on. In his defence Hulley said that he told the boy to move the cart out of the way, but he mistook his orders. Fined 10s., including costs.
