1907 09 May - The Manchester Guardian: CORRESPONDENCE – MANCHESTER’S GAS SUPPLY Sir,—I was very pleased to read lately in your columns that more than ordinary interest is being taken in the matter of gas supply, and the letter from Mr. Frank H. Goude in to-day’s issue, accompanied by such important figures, ought to stir up matters and enable the users to get at the proper facts. For Alderman Gibson and the Gas Committee generally to take the credit they do for contributing annually so much money to the relief of the rates, is preposterous, as the whole business is a rnonopoly, with power to charge any price they like and give in return any quality of gas they like—surely a piece of business that would not last even the shortest, length of time if carried on under competition. Some few months back the lights in my house gradually grew so feeble in their illuminating power that we were moving about in semi-darkness, and the atmosphere generally in the house and the ceilings were very bad. I wrote to my District Board in Levenshulme and also to the Town Hall, but got no satisfaction, but only implied statements that I had better adopt incandescent burners. An inspector of the Manchester Corporation came along and took pressure records, and also fitted one or two new burners with a cap” or “spreader” on the top, which, with, the disturbances of the air in the rooms when anyone walked about or a door was opened, gave a flame which resembled the flaring lights to be seen in rows in front of shops, and yet the rooms were insufficiently lighted and the ceilings blackened in a very short time. If Mr. Goude has any figures relative to the pressure of the gas at the customer’s burner I think the public would be interested to see them, as I was very much astonished to see a pressure of two inches in my bedroom, which, if I remember correctly, Is more than double what it was in 1898 or thereabouts. My opinion is that, to cope with competition from electric lights and oil, the gas pressure has been steadily increased, the candle power and corresponding illuminating power greatly reduced. and the charge to the public reduced very little, the first two items contributing very largely to the money profits and at the same time to our personal discomfort. If the new method of testing showed a reduction of candle power of 17.04 to 15.30, one is inclined to ask what would the old system of testing have shown.—Yours, &e, . R. D. HULLEY Levenshulme May 7. .
1907 23 Sep - The Manchester Guardian; TRAFFORD PARK TRAM SERVICE. Mr. R. D. Hulley writes :—“ Having had the desire during the last few Mornings to reach our works in Trafford Park before 7 a.m., I have been very considerably surprised at the difficulty of accomplishing what appears to be such an easy undertaking. I don’t think I exaggerate in the least when I state that much money Is lost to the thousands of workmen who are employed in the Park through their not being able to arrive in time in consequence of delays and breakdowns in the tram service. For want of more trams one can see at every stopping place numbers of men who are waiting, and who have to be disappointed because the car is full, and waiting for the next means loss of time and wages. We want the best workmen we can get in the various trades to come to work in Trafford Park, but to effect this there must be convenient and reliable means for them to reach their work and get home again without the, at present, daily risk of losing time and money through a poor car service.”
1908 17 Aug - The Manchester Guardian: THE QUALITY OF MANCHESTER GAS To the Editor of the Manchester Guardian. Sir,—Notwithstanding Mr. Gibson’s statement “The gas is as good as ever it was,” the quality of the gas for illuminating purposes has during the last few years been steadily on the decline, and at the present time, unless the gas is used through incandescent mantles or large flaring burners, the light obtainable is miserable and totally inadequate. Considering that the supply of gas for illuminating purposes is a monopoly of the Corporation, the public should be safeguarded with “standards of quality” with respect to its use for power or lighting. So Iong as the standard is maintained, the Corporation could do all in its power to cheapen cost of production and retail at the lowest possible price; but the standard must be maintained. With respect to its decline and instability, I quote the following from a paper read before the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on Friday, April 10, 1908, on “The governing and the regularity of gas engines “:—“ It is unfortunate that the particulars given in these and in other tests are comparable only with themselves and not with each other, owing to the constant and great variation in the calorific value of the Manchester gas, which during the last two or three years has constantly fluctuated from less than 500 to over 600 B.Th.A. per cubic foot (on the lower scale) as tested in a, Junker calorimeter, often varying 40 or more units during a test, and larger amounts from day to day.” The pressure in the mains ten years ago was I believe under 1 in. of water; to-day I think it will be found to be over 2in., if not touching 2½in; and I presume this extra pressure is necessary to get a correspondingly large volume of gas through to make up for its poorer quality. Hence the gas bill may be analysed as follows :—Old gas bill equals small quantity plus good gas equals 50s.; present gas bill equals large quantity plus bad gas equals 50s.—gain to Corporation on account of “bad gas” being so much proportionately cheaper to make than the good gas. Considering the increased pressure In the mains and the admixture with the gas of new constituents. which, I believe, are very weak in odour and dangerous when inhaled, is there not great risk with the old fittings In old property, and even with. the very flimsy fittings in the present-day new cheap property ? Yours, &c., R. D. HULLEY, M.I.Mech.E. August 14
Note by Ray Hulley History of Rolls Royce - from Wikipedia. In 1884, Henry Royce started an electrical and mechanical business. He made his first car, a two- cylinder Royce 10, in his Manchester factory in 1904, and was introduced to Charles Rolls at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on 4 May of that year. Rolls was proprietor of an early motor car dealership, C.S.Rolls & Co. in Fulham.

1878 Jul 24 - Derby Mercury - Buxton Petty Sessions Herbert Hully, a young man in the employ of Mr Chantry, was summoned for causing an obstruction by hawking fruit in front of the principal entrance to the pavilion and gardens in St John's-road. Mr Newbold, the gate-keeper, said that the nuisance was very great, and that the directors of the company had caused a complaint to be made about it. In this instance, a fine of 1s. only and costs was imposed; but in all similar cases, the Bench said the fine would be much heavier.
