1870 19 Mar - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - BAKEWELL - FRIDAY, Before W. LONGSDON, R.W.M. NASFIELD, R. DARWIN, E.W. FOX, and J. SLEIGH, Esqrs. ALLEGED LARCENY AT ASHFORD - James Hulley, labourer, Ashford, appeared on remand, charged with stealing a crowbar, value 3s. 6d., the property of James Smith, at Ashford, on the 16th March 1869. James Smith said: I saw the bar safe in my quarry at Ashford on the 16th March, 1869. Next morning it was gone, and I gave information to the police. On the 16th of the present month, I saw it In the shop of Samuel Furness, blacksmith, Ashford, and at once identified it. I asked Mr Furness from whom he had bought it , and he refused to tell me. Samuel Furness said he bought the bar from Hulley about a month or five weeks ago. He paid him 1s. for it. Police-constable Hallam said he apprehended Hulley on the 16th inst., and charged him with stealing it. Hulley, in defence, said he found it in a sough in a field called the Five Acres. The Bench said they did not believe he had stolen it but reprimanded him for not informing the police when he found the bar.
1870 Mar 23 - Derby Mercury - Bakewell - Petty Sessions, Friday. James Hulley, a labourer, Ashford, appeared, on remand, charged with stealing an iron bar, value three shillings and 6d, the property of James Smith, Ashbourne, on the 16th of March, 1869. Hulley denied stealing the bar, but said he found it in a field, called the "Five Acres," and sold it to Mr Furness, blacksmith, Ashford. Mr Furness said Hulley told him he had found it, and if anyone claimed it to tell him. Dismissed.
1870 02 Dec - Derbyshire Advertiser and Journal. BAKEWELL - A MAN FOUND DROWNED - On Sunday morning, the body of a man was found lying in the river Wye, a little above Holme bridge. On Monday afternoon, an inquest was held on the body at the King’s Arms, Bakewell, before the deputy-coroner. James Hully, of Ashford, deposed that on Tuesday evening, about 8.30, he saw a man go in the direction of the spot where the body was found. The man whom he saw was in every respect like the deceased. Police-constable Mellor stated that he searched the deceased’s clothing and found two pairs of spectacles, one pair of scissors, and some wax, but no letters. The braces which deceased wore appeared like those worn by soldiers, and bore the mark “C., 284.”. Dr. Knox sated that he had made a post-mortem examination. The body was that of a man about 58 years of age. There were no external marks of violence sufficient to cause death; all the parts were healthy. The man was evidently living when he got into the water. The jury returned a verdict of “Found drowned.”.

1867 19 Mar - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent-FRIENDLY SOCIETY’S CASE - at Bakewell County Court, on Saturday, before Mr Russell, the deputy judge, a point was raised in reference to friendly societies, which may be important for members of such societies to know. An action was brought by James Hulley, of Ashford, on half of his wife Mary Hulley, the claim that being for £3, alleged to be due as sick pay to Mrs. Hulley from the Ashford Female Friendly Society, of which she is a member. A similar action was brought by the plaintiff some time ago and as the society was not represented, Mrs. Hulley obtained judgement in her favour. The money was not paid, and on the case again coming again before the court it was suggested that the matter should be settled by arbitration in accordance with one of the rules of the society - that several names of persons who would act as arbitrators should be put into a glass and that three of them should be drawn by Mrs. Hulley. This her husband refused her to do on the grounds that his wife was entitled to the sick pay of ther society, and that a certificate as to the state of her health, obtained from the Buxton Infirmary, and which would be material to the arbitrators, was kept back by the society. On behalf of Elizabeth Thorpe the mistress of the society, who was the defendant, it was denied that such a certificate was in her possession, and as the plaintiff refused to submit to arbitration judgement went against her. The third action for the recovery of the money was that which came before the Court on Saturday; and Mr. Branson, who appeared or the defendant, took a preliminary objection that the plaintiff had been precipitate, the case coming on a hearing 37 days after the claim for the money instead of 40 days, the number required by law. This objection was held to be fatal, and the plaintiff was accordingly non-suited. Mr. Neil of Matlock, was for the plaintiff. (also in 1867 Mar 23 Sheffield and Rotherham Independent )

I thought it was Elizabeth born 1819, but found out from your website, that it wasn't, so I will now be able to see further back via your website. Thank you! Elizabeth married Thomas Mycock (born Buxton). They married in 1845, in Cheadle, St. Marys. Cheshire. Elizabeths father was down as William Hulley - farmer. Thomas Mycock's father was John Mycock - sadler. They had several children, Sarah Ann Mycock, born approx 1846 was my great grandmother. She married Thomas Allen Swindell born 1844, Winster, Derbyshire) in Manchester. Sarah Ann and Thomas had Florence Annie Allen Swindell, My grandmother. I am waiting and hoping, that Ken Mycock(one name org) will be able to find Thomas Mycocks Buxton birth, eventually, so will be able to be more definite about facts. I was able to find out a lot about Winster from Dawn Scoting's Winster village website, so the Elizabeth Hulley/Father William Hulley (Great Longstone) are the only ones that seem to fit, however I am still not 100% sure.

Note: it is not certain that this is the Clara Hulley who married in March qtr 1877, but by a process of elimination she is the only Clara Hulley who fits into the date. FreeBMD shows two possible spouses: William John Clark or John Atkinson Gray. A search of the 1881 census has found an entry for a Martha M. Clark (married with a 2 year old child) living at Southampton and a Martha Matilda Annett is listed in the same quarter as Clara Hulley, so it assumed that Clara Hulley married John Atkinson Gray.

1857 Oct 07 - The Derby Mercury Bakewell Petty Sessions - October 2. (Before W. Longsdon, and NF R. W. M. Nesfield Esqs.) Charge of Stealing Nuts -- William Hulley charged Robert with having stolen nuts at Great Longstone. It appeared the wrong person had been summoned, as the brother of the present defendant was the person meant. The case of course could not be proceeded with; but a magistrate remarked, he had no doubt it was a dodge between the two boys to send the wrong one, but as the wrong one had been summoned, complainant must pay him a shilling for his time and summons the right one.
1857 Oct 16 - The Derby Mercury Bakewell Petty Sessions - October 2. (Before W. Longsdon, and NF R. W. M. Nesfield Esqs. and Sir J. Paxton) Charge of Stealing Nuts -- William Hulley charged Michael How with having stolen nuts at Netherwood on the 19th of September. This was an adjourned case, defendants in other having been previously summoned by mistake. The case to-day turned out to be a new breach of trust with which the Bench could not entertain, and the case was dismissed, Hulley being told he might prosecute defendant at Derby.
