2009 30 Jul - Note from Julie Kimpton: George Hooley served in both the Boer and First world wars- according to Jim Hooley his father was captured by the Boers and was a prisoner of war where his treatment was said to be better than that of the British! [NB first child not born till [Reg]Q1 1903. they were married in 1898]. George's first world war medal record card from the National Archives [on file Jan 2006] showed that he earned all three standard service medals, the 1914/15 star, the British and Victory. It also showed he first served in the * European Theatre* [code 1] on 17th Feb 1915. He was first in the Cheshire regiment, No:16212 and then the Labour Corps No: 423898. In October 2006, an experienced PRO researcher, Tom Tulloch Marshall carried out research on George's military service, and gave the following results:
Tom Tulloch-Marshall World War One Research Services British Army, Navy, RFC & RAF 12 Oakhill Close, Ashtead, Surrey, KT21 2JQ, England e-mail ~ FamousRaider@btinternet.com website ~<http://www.btinternet.com/~prosearch/index.html>
Private 16212 George Hooley ~ 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment latterly Private 423898 Labour Corps ? formerly ? Private 3693 ~ 4th Bn Cheshire Regiment ~ 2nd Boer War 1899-1902
Please find enclosed a CD containing copies of George‘s service medal index card and the rolls for his 1914-15 Star and British War and Victory Medals. Unfortunately no service record survives, - the relevant National Archives (PRO) film references were (burned series) WO363/H2437 and misfile film No 45, (unburned series) WO364/1737, 4914, 5312, and 5803. I have also searched the Ministry of Pensions WW1 retained sample records at the National Archives (record class “PIN”) and have to advise that there is nothing relevant to George amongst those papers. (The retention % for the MoP records, which are an entirely separate record class from the service records, was very small). Searches of all the named servicemen sub-indexes to the WW1 PoW Interrogation reports in records class WO161 have also failed to find any reference to George. This cannot be taken to mean that he wasn’t a WW1 PoW, but simply that there isn’t any report there. Searches of the ledgers for the Queen’s and King’s South Africa Medals for the Second Boer War to the Cheshire Regiment reveal one man 3693 G Hooley in 4th Bn with entitlement to the QSA with Cape Colony and Orange Free State bars, and the KSA with 1901 and 1902 bars. Nothing on the medal rolls points to his having been a Boer PoW, though again this cannot be taken to mean that he wasn’t one. This man does not appear in the publication “South African Field Force Casualties” - but yet again this cannot be taken to mean that he wasn’t a PoW.The WW1 medal records show a first overseas date 17/2/15, to France, which means that George was a reinforcement to 1st Bn. Barring errors his WW1 service with the Cheshires was all with 1st Bn which would rule out service in Mesopotamia ** and hence being a PoW of the Turks. Also the subsequent and final service with the Labour Corps, with discharge to Class Z Army Reserve (liable to recall) 1/4/19 just doesn’t ring true if he had been a PoW. I’m sorry that this hasn’t been more positive as far as a surviving service record is concerned and that all the indicators “against” PoW status are down to lack of proof rather than proof-positive. The one real remaining avenue of research would be the possibility that Attestation & Discharge Papers for 3693 G Hooley exist for the 1900-1913 discharge period and that these were not withdrawn from file and incorporated with the “new” WW1 papers for 16212 Hooley (always assuming that the two men identified are one and the same man). Please let me know if you have any queries, or if anything else is required. Yours sincerely, Tom Tulloch Marshall [copies of all medal roll photos on file- CD]
**ed: I discovered a photo which was taken at Kut showing a man looking remarkably like George Hooley, hence why I asked Tom to check POW records for Mesopotamia.
