2010 20 Mar - note from Sharon Kearns;

Just had a look at the death certificate for Catherine Hulley (many thanks for its email)
and noticed that she had a stay at the Melbourne benevolent Asylum. I have the
microfische for this period so thought I would have a look Here goes:
Name: Catherine Hulley

Native Place: England
Arrival in Colony: 1842
Age: 56
Religion: Protestant
Grounds for Application (left Blank)
By whom recommended” ….. Sleight (cant read forts initials Looks like “In”)
Date of Admission” 3rd June
Period for which admitted: left blank
Parents Names: left blank

2010 20 Mar - note from Malcolm Sears

John Sleight married Eliza Atkinson on 02 Sept 1836, marriage before Ann
P(B)ullinger married James Tait on 21 09 1836 and witness were James Tait and Ann
Pullinger. Witness to Jas Tait marriage were John Sleight and Catherine Hully so it
must be the right ones.
John Sleight and Eliza had kids in Victoria and John died 1871 & Eliza 1866 (born
London). May be a connection between Catherine and Eliza. Followed these as they
were wedding witnesses.

2010 20 Mar - note from Jo Archer

Hi everyone The linked death certificate Malcom found clearly shows this lady in the
asylum is Catherine Bullinger(neeTownsend-Timbrell) as birthplace of London and
having 1 child all fit with the woman who married James Hulley . She seems to have
managed to have a shorter sentence in Tassie than she got in court (14 years) in
England, so presumably it was good behaviour that reduced her sentence so she
could leave the island. It is possible she went searching for her husband in Melbourne
in 1841, only to find him in another relationship with Catherine Rowe/ Cundy.
Perhaps she only got admitted to the asylum when too ill to work- a 15 day stay should
not be thought strange - as it was probably not the best of places- more like paupers
hospital I should think . Google image search shows it looks like a typical old UK work
house/ mental asylum!
I am not suprised records do not mention Tasmania- she probably did not tell them
this - as she was dying - and wanted to forget that period in her life - From recent
reading of research I believe that life for (convict) women in those days in Tasmania,
was probably harder than for the men- for obvious reasons. Information we have found
on her Timbrell family in England shows she was probably from a "well off " back
ground and she was clearly educated far better than most women at the time, to be
able to be a governess. James Hulley hat maker/ labourer/ shoe maker was probably
not an ideal husband for her!
I must admit was was pleased to find out that she may have been able to have "a life"
of sorts beyond Tasmania. Her punishment of 14 years far exceeded her crime and
we do not know what happened to her first husband. Possible early widowhood (as
cannot find when her husband died) and definite earlier bankruptcy of the Timbrell
family may have forced her into the position to get involved in the theft. I thought it
strange that her accomplice only got 7 years - and he committed the theft. I wonder if
the fact she was educated meant they judged her more harshly.
The London Gazette "online" has details of the bankruptcy of the Timbrell family
effecting father and son- one (her brother ( Townsend- Timbrell) I think was in the
Kings Bench Debtors prison circa 1825 - and The National Archive has a Chancery
Court dispute between her father and his son- They had been probably fairly wealthy
employers in the heart of the Bermondsey tanning industry in Grange road . ( I have
saved the London Gazette records if any one wants them) . They first get into difficulty
in 1815 - when recession hit England big time at end of the wars with France.
Any way thanks again to Malcom and Sharon for getting me interested in family
research again and sending round the new information. Pauline's Timbrell/
Bullinger/Hulley family are a fascinating bunch-
On another note I noticed on the death cert of the other Catherine (Rowe/ Cundy/
Hulley ) that she died in a lane off Little Lonsdale Rd Melbourne. I google mapped the
address and found in right in the centre of Melbourne close to the National Library-
wow . I would love to read more about those early days in Australia as the stuff I have
read is fascinating. Libraries in my home area are not very well stocked on this
subject.

and in the Hundreds of East and Lesnewth. It is bounded on the north by the
parishes of Treneglos and Tresmere, on the east by Egloskerry and Trewen, on the
south by Altarnun, and on the west by St Clether. Laneast is a small village in north-
east Cornwall about seven miles west of Launceston, just south of the A395. The
name comes from 'lann',- church site, followed by a geographical reference to its
position in reference to the older St Clether site. The main villages are the
Churchtown and Badgall.
The death certificate for Catherine states that her parents were called John and
Catherine and that she had 5 children alive and 2 dead in 1877.
