Extracts from Indents for 45 Female Prisoners Disembarked at Hobart Town VD Land from the Ship Mary Ann Henry Warington Master:
Name: Keziah ux. James Hulley Where convicted: Chester Quarter Sessions When: 10th July 1821 Term: Seven Years
Hulley, Keziah Convict No: 34965 Extra Identifier: SEE Surname: SEE Given Names: Voyage Ship: Mary Ann Voyage No: 21a; Arrival Date: 02 May 1822 Departure Date: 15 Dec 1821; Departure Port: Portsmouth Conduct Record: CON40/1/5
Dear Pauline, Thank you for getting back to us regarding your difficulty in finding Keziah Hulley's records online. I have also had a great amount of difficulty finding Keziah in both our online and microfilm copy of CON40/1/5. I was able to find James's record , and another record for Keziah (CON13/1/2 p.335), attached, but no CON40/1/5 for Keziah. I am looking into this and will email you a copy if I locate the correct record. I checked the listing of convicts that is available from the Queensland State Library (<http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/info/fh/convicts/about)> and uncovered the following: Keziah Hulley, one of 108 convicts transported on the Mary Ann, November 1822. Sentence details: Convicted at Chester Quarter Sessions for a term of 7 years on 10 July 1821. Wife of James Hulley. Vessel: Mary Ann; Date of Departure: November 1822. Place of Arrival: New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land. Source: Australian Joint Copying Project. Microfilm Roll 88, Class and Piece Number HO11/4, Page Number 129 (66) Update note: Dear Pauline, A colleague undertook another search for me, and although he did not find anything in CON40/1/5 he responded as follows. I hope this further information assists your research, Regards, Jenny Her arrival in Hobart is confirmed in the Colonial Secretary’s Index (1788-1825) held by the State Records of NSW: - HULLEY, Keziah. Per "Mary Anne", 1822; wife of James Hulley, 1822 Jun 5 -On list of convicts disembarked at Hobart from the "Mary Anne" (Reel 6009; 4/3505 p.385) Comprehensive records of convicts in Tasmania were introduced by Governor Arthur in 1824. Anyone who was a convict at that time was entered in the registers retrospectively. Unfortunately, Keziah Hulley died less than two months after arriving in the colony on 11 June 1822. I think this explains why she does not appear in CON40. This is supported by the fact that Phillip Tardif in his book 'Notorious Strumpets and Dangerous Girls' does not quote CON40 as a source for her entry. He does quote the CON13, along with CON22 (Comprehensive Register of Convicts), several AJCP references and the Registrar General’s Department (presumably for her death). Her entry in Tardif (#670) is as follows: Hulley, Keziah (wife of James) Also spelt Haley; Convicted Chester Quarter Sessions 10 July 1821 – 7 years. Transported For Larceny; Ship’s Surgeon’s Comments – 1 April 1822: “An old woman, … has often exhibited in her conduct an estrangement of mind: she now labours under Insanity and is so far mischievous, and if allowed, even outrageous in her actions as to render coercion necessary”. 4 May 1822: Landed in Hobart Town, “being in an infirm state of health and advancing daily in debility”; Description Age 55 (1822); Colonial Experiences 1822: 11 June Died at Hobart Town”. You will note that the date of birth does not correlate between the two sources: 1773 on the Hulley Family site and 1767 in Tardif. However, the name is unique (except for her daughter who was also named Keziah); both agree she was convicted in Chester and both name James as her husband. I feel confident they are one and the same. Irrespective, the record provided by Tardif is all we are required to provide from a Tasmanian perspective. I wouldn’t worry with CON13 and CON22; they will only duplicate what is here. Regrettably, there isn’t much of a tale to tell of her Tasmanian experience. Considering most of her life was spent in Britain, the client might like to contact Archives UK where I suspect s/he will find further details (<http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/).>
