Macclesfield Forest.   Memorandum that the 4 December 31 Elizabeth [1588] Laurence Hooley of Raynowe co. Chester yeoman in his proper 
person at Lyme in Hanley within the Forest of Macclesfield in the said county came before Peter Legh Knt. deputy of Henry Earl of Derby, Steward 
of the said Lady the Queen  for the said Forest, Edmund Jodrell gentleman, Roger Downes of Ryddycarre gentleman, Francis Pott, Roger Pott, 
and James Hey clerk of the court of the said Forest and other faithful persons of the said Lady the Queen then being present And sought a licence to 
enter into all the messuages lands tenements &c. with their appurtenances in Raynowe within the said Forest, which lately were those of 
John Hooley deceased father of the said Laurence Hooley and which are accustomed to pay as of old rent to our said Lady the Queen and her 
ancestors, lords of Macclesfield, a rent of 4 pence and one halfpenny.  And thereupon the said Queen by her Steward aforesaid gave and conceded 
all and singular the said messuages, lands &c to the said Laurence Hooley to be held by the said Laurence Hooley and his assigns by the said rent 
and service thence due and of right accustomed, according to the custom of the said Manor and Forest.  And the said Laurence Hooley by the said 
Steward the day and year aforesaid according to the custom of the said Manor and Forest.  And the said Laurence gave to the said Queen for his 
relief thence 4 pence and one halfpenny by the pledge of the said Roger Pott.  In witness of which the seal of the office of the said Steward is affixed 
to this, given the day and year abovesaid.                                            Hey

kitchen of one baye, One barne of 4 bayes, and one out Ho., and two bayes at the end for beaste and ewes. Three other bayes for haye and beaste,

                Memorandum that the Jurors aforesaid psent and saye, that JOHN HOOLEY his father hath the same house and no more, and his grandfather

Personal answers of Lawrence Hooley and Katherine Hooley his wife regarding the articles above brought against Thomas Oldfield, taken 10th 
October 1616
....to the second article they say that they believe ‘that Thomas Oldfield and Ellen his promised wife in some of the months and year stated, being 
free from contract of matrimony, as they believed, did commune and confer together but never conferred of any contract’ in the presence of 
Lawrence Hooley and Katherine Hooley, ‘saving that the said Oldfield came to the Hooleys’ house and sometimes was in the company of the said 
Ellen and made love unto her’, as they believe....
.....to the fourth article they say ‘that the said Thomas and Ellen did affirm unto them that they were married together’ which they do not believe to 
be true, ‘saving that they do believe that the said Thomas and Ellen were free from any former contract, as they believe, before their promised 
marriage
....to the second article he says ‘that there was an agreement to the like purpose and effect, mentioned in this article, made betwixt the parties 
likewise mentioned in this article’ 
....to the third article ‘that the last time this deponent saw the said Ellen Oldfield was at this deponent’s house’
....to the fourth he says ‘that after the said Ellen’s departure from this deponent’s house this deponent hearing that she went not home to her father’s 
and mother’s as she said she would, and fearing least this deponent and his wife should come into trouble in respect of the premises this deponent’s 
said wife went to the said Ellen’s father’s house and finding her mother within, brought her to this deponent who asked where her daughter Ellen was, 
and she answered she could not tell, whereupon this deponent said if she be in Cheshire I will find her, and then the said Ellen’s mother said I have 
heard from her the said Ellen and she is well and I thank God hath met with her friends or to the like effect, before should come to any harm she the 
said Ellen should be fetched home again’

Memorandum that on the 27th Nov. 20 James [1622] Jasper Willott of Tiderington, co. Chester, yeoman, Humphrey Swindells, senior, of Rainow 
yeoman, Humphrey Swindells, junior, of Rainow yeoman, and Edward Barber of Tiderington, yeoman, at Prestbury within the Manor and Forest of 
Macclesfield, came before Sir Urian Legh, Knight, Kings locum tenens for the Right Hon. William, Earl of Derby, Steward for the Very Noble 
Lord Charles Prince of Wales as Earl of Chester of his Manor and Forest of Macclesfield Robert Yeveley, Laurence Pott, Francis Broadhurst 
and William Burges, Clerk of the Court of the Manor and Forest aforesaid, and other faithful persons then being present.   And surrendered into the 
hands of the said Prince as Lord of Macclesfield 1 close of land in Rainow, commonly called Le Herre Esburie late in the occupation of John 
Swindells of Rainow, with all its appurtenances.  To this intent that the said land should be granted to John  Hooley of Rainow, yeoman, his heirs 
and assigns for ever, at the annual rent of 7d. to be held of the Lord the Prince, according to the custom of the Manor and Forest aforesaid.  And 
thereupon the said land was so granted and full seisin of the same was given to the said John Hooley who paid for a fine 7d. by the pledge of 
Francis Broadhurst.

8 ref 20 To all Christian people &c. Lawrence Hooley of Ranowe, co. Chester, yeoman, sendeth greeting.  Whereas Arthur Davenport of Calveley in 
the said county, esquire, by Indenture of lease bearing date the 27th day of November, in the 13th year of the reign of our Sovereign King James of 
England, France and Ireland [1615] and 49th of Scotland [1615] did demise and let to farm unto the said Lawrence Hooley all those lands, tenements, 
meadows, leasowes, pastures, woods, underwoods, waters, commons, turbaries, and heredictaments, whatsoever, with their appurtenances, of the 
said Arthur Davenporte in Rainow aforesaid, and then in the tenure and occupation of me the said Lawrence Howley (except and reserved to the 
said Arthur Davenport, his heirs and assigns, all mines of coal being within the premises or any part thereof, together with free liberty to dig, search 
for, and get coals within the premises or any part thereof and with free ingress, agress, and regress to fetch, bear, and carry away all such coals as 
shall be had or gotten in or upon the premises, or any part thereof) To have and to hold the said lands, tenements, meadows, leasowes, pastures, 
and all other  premises with their appurtenances ( except as before excepted)  to me the said Lawrence Howley and my assigns for and during the 
term of  the lives natural of me the said Lawrence and of Katherine now my  wife and of Henry Howley, brother of me the said Lawrence, and for 
and during the term of the life of the longest liver of us.  As in and by the said Indenture of lease more at large appeareth by virtue whereof, and of 
livery thereupon executed, I the said Lawrence into the said lands &c. entered and was lawfully siesed thereof in my demesne as of freehold, for and 
during the term aforesaid. Now know ye that I the said Lawrence Howley for divers good considerations have hereby granted and surrendered to the 
said Arthur Davenport all the said lands &c. together with the said Indenture of lease, and all my right and title to the same.
Date the 18th February 20 James [1623] of Scotland the 56th.

21 This Indenture made the 1st May 21 James I [1623] Between Arthur Davenporte of Calveley co. Chester, Esquire, and Lawrence Hooley of Ranow in 
the said county yeoman, Witnesseth that in consideration of the surrender of a former lease, made by the said Arthur Davenporte unto the said 
Lawrence Hooley, of the lands hereinafter mentioned, for the term of the lives of Lawrence Howley, John Howley, his son, and Henrie Hooley, brother 
of the said Lawrence Hooley, and in consideration of a certain sum of money to the said Arthur Davenporte paid by the said Lawrence Hooley, the 
receipt whereof the said Arthur Davenporte doth hereby acknowledge .  And for other good considerations, he the said Arthur Davenport Hath let to 
farm to the said Lawrence Howley, all those lands &c. of the said Arthur Davenporte in Ranowe aforesaid, now in the occupation of the said 
Lawrence Hooley or his assigns, To have and to hold for his life , and for the lives of the said John Howley, his son, and of Katherin, wife of the said 
John, paying the yearly rent of 21s.8d by even portions, and two rent capons yearly at the feast of Easter, with power of distraint for non-payment of 
rent.  And the said Lawrence Hooley doth covenant with the said Arthur Davenporte in manner and forme following, that is to say, “That when and so 
often duringe the said terme as hee the said Arthur Davenporte in his lief tyme or afterwards, such person or persons respectivelie to whom the 
imediate Revercon or Remainder of the premises shall certenlie belonge, shall serve in his or their owne persons in the wars of our  Soveraigne Lord 
the King’s Majestie that now is, his heirs, or successors, or shall furnish or sett forwards any man or men towards the said warrs that then and soe 
often the said Lawrence Hooley and his assigns shall and will finde, provide for, have in readiness, and sett forth, one sufficient and Able Billman, 
with a plate coate and a sculle, to serve and attend upon the said Arthur Davenporte and his heirs in the warrs aforesaid, in such place, rowne, 
degree, and service of a billman as shall be assigned or appointed by the said Arthur Davenporte or the said person or persons aforesaid.”  And also 
that the said Lawrence Hooley, during the life-time of the said Arthur Davenporte and afterwards, pay herriotts &c according to the quantity of his rent.  
And the said Arthur Davenporte doth covenant with the said Lawrence Hooley, to grant the said lands &c in manner aforesaid, Provided that it shall 
be lawful for the said Lawrence Hooley and his assigns during the said term, to make marlepitts upon the premises,  to dig and get marle for the 
mending of the premises.  Provided also that the said Lawrence Hooley or his assigns shall not grant the said lands &c. to any person, without the 
consent of the said Arthur Davenporte, or his heirs, except to his wife or children, And moreover the said Arthur Davenporte hath made Edward 
Jackson and Richard Normansell his lawful attorneys, to deliver full possession of the said premises to the said Lawrence Hooley or to his attorney.

This Indenture made the 20th March 22 James I [1625] Between Lawrence Hooley of Ranow,  co, Chester, yeoman, of the one part, and George 
Willott, son of Jasper Willott of Tiderington, Richard Normansell of Bollington,  and Edward Jackson of Hurdesfield in the said county, yeoman, of the 
other part.  Witnesseth that whereas Arthur Davenporte of Calveley in the said county, Esquire, by his Indenture of lease, bearing date the 1st May 21 
James I [1623]  Hath let to farm to the said Lawrence Hooley, all those lands, tenements, meadowes, leasowes, pastures, woods, underwoods, 
waters, commons, turbaries, and heredictaments, with their appurtenances, of the said Arthur Davenporte in Ranow aforesaid, and then or late in the 
occupation of the said Lawrence Hooley, or his assigns.  To have and to hold the said lands &c. to the said Lawrence Hooley and his assigns for the 
lives of him the said Lawrence and John Howley his son, and of Katherin, wife of the said John.  The said Lawrence Hooley entered into the premises 
and was and is seised in his demesne, as of freehold during the term aforesaid.  Now this Indenture witnesseth that the said Lawrence Hooley, in 
consideration of the marriage solemnized between the said John Hooley and Katherine, now his wife, daughter of the said Jasper Willott, and in 
performance of the agreements made between the said Lawrence Hooley and Jasper Willott, in consideration of the said marriage, and for the 
assigning of the premises unto the said John and Katherin, or to their uses, as is hereafter expressed, and for the assigning of the moiety of the said 
premises to the use of the said Katherine, now wife of the said  Lawrence in case she shall survive him, for ( line too faint) and for other good 
considerations, Hath demised &c. unto the said George Willott, Richard Normansell, and Edward Jackson all the aforesaid lands &c. to have and to 
hold the said lands &c. unto the said George Willott, Richard Normansell, and Edward Jackson from the day of the date thereof, for the term of 90 
years if the said Lawrence Hooley, John Hooley and Katherine his wife or any of them shall so long live in as large and ample manner as the same 
were granted by the before mentioned indenture of lease, upon special trust that they shall suffer the said John Hooley and Katherine his wife to 
occupy the said closes &c. commonly called the Barrfield, the Toote-hill field, two closes called the Walles, part of the lower field already measured 
and set out for so many years as the said Lawrence Hooley shall happen to live, the said John and Katherine paying yearly the sum of ten shillings   
And upon trust that they will permit the said Lawrence Hooley and his assigns to hold the rest of the said land for his life, And upon further trust that 
the said George Willott, Richard Normansell, and Edward Jackson will permit Katherine wife of the said Lawrence to hold a full moiety and one half of 
the aforesaid lands &c. after the decease of the said Lawrence Hooley, for her life. And after her decease that they shall permit the said John Hooley 
and Katherine his wife, and the heirs of their bodies to hold the said lands &c. And in default of such heirs, to the assigns of the said John.  And upon 
further trust that if the said John Hooley and Katherine his wife shall die in the lifetime of the said Lawrence Hooley, without issue, that they will permit 
the said Lawrence Hooley and his assigns to hold the said lands &c. for the rest of the term of lease aforesaid, except so many parcels of the said 
land, as the said John, by his writing shall have appointed for the payment of his true debts.

Memorandum that on the 4th July I Charles [1625], Edward Jackson, junior of Hurdsfield co. Chester, yeoman, in his proper person at Adlington, 
came before Sir Urian Legh, Knt. locum tenens of the said Steward, Edward Green, Robert Yeveley, Richard Normansell, John Hooley and William 
Burges Clerk of the Court of the Manor and Forest aforesaid, and other faithful persons then being present, And produced a letter of Attorney from 
Arthur Davenport of Calveley, to surrender all the common lands in Rainow lately granted to him the said Arthur Davenport containing about 40 acres 
of Cheshire measure To the intent that the same should be granted to Lawrence Howley of Rainow yeoman, for the lives of the said Lawrence, and 
John Howley, son of the said Lawrence, and Katherine, wife of the said John at the yearly rent of 12d.  And by virtue of which letter of Attorney the 
said lands were surrendered and regranted accordingly.  And now in full Halmote held the 25th July the said Lawrence Howley came in his own 
proper person and was duly admitted into the said land according to the custom of the Manor  and Forest, paying a rental to the said King as Lord of 
Macclesfeild of 10s 6d for the said lands.  And the said Lawrence gave to the said King for a fine, the sum of 10s 6d by the pledge of John Howley.

Lawrence Howley of Rainow co. Chester, yeoman in his proper person came here in full Halmote the day and year above said, before Sir Edward 
Fitton Bart, locum tenens for the said the Steward, Lawrence Downes Esq., Francis Pott, gent, Thomas Shrigley of Bollington, and William Burges, 
Clerk of the Court of the Manor and Forest aforesaid, and other pesons there being present  And received from the said Lord the King as Lord of 
Macclesfield, by the hands of the said Steward , all the lands lying in Rainow in  the said Forest being about 8 acres of Cheshire measure, more or 
less, lately allotted to the said Lawrence Howley as common land, by virtue of an agreement made by the Commissioners on behalf of the Prince of 
Wales on the one part, and Roger Downes Esq. Francis Pott, William Clowes, gentlemen, and Richard Normansell, customary tenants of the said 
manor on behalf of themselves and the other customary tenants of the said manor, and granted in the Exchequer of the said King at Chester, the last 
day of May 19 James [1620]. He the said Lawrence paying thence the yearly rent of 2s. And thereupon full seisin of the said lands was granted to the 
said Lawrence and he paid as a fine for the sum of 2s. by the pledge of John  Howley.

for the manor and forest of Macclesfield aforesaid, Thomas Turner. Henry Jackson, George Shrigley, and William Burgess Clerk of the Court of the 
Manor and Forest of Macclesfield aforesaid, and other faithful persons then being present.  And surrendered into the hands of the said Lord the King, 
according to the custom of the said manor and forest, all those common lands in Rainow containing about 8 acres of Cheshire measure, lately in the 
manor and forest aforesaid granted to the said Lawrence Howley. To this intent that the said lands should be divided into three parts, one third part 
of which should be given to John Howley son of the said Lawrence Howley, and the other two parts should remain to the said Lawrence Howley for 
the term of his life, and after his decease to the said John Howley, and the said lands were accordingly so re-granted and the said Lawrence and 
John shall pay to the said King for a fine, the sum of 2s. 26 Oct 1630

8 ref 20 To all Christian people &c. Lawrence Hooley of Ranowe, co. Chester, yeoman, sendeth greeting.  Whereas Arthur Davenport of Calveley in 
the said county, esquire, by Indenture of lease bearing date the 27th day of November, in the 13th year of the reign of our Sovereign King James of 
England, France and Ireland [1615] and 49th of Scotland [1615] did demise and let to farm unto the said Lawrence Hooley all those lands, tenements, 
meadows, leasowes, pastures, woods, underwoods, waters, commons, turbaries, and heredictaments, whatsoever, with their appurtenances, of the 
said Arthur Davenporte in Rainow aforesaid, and then in the tenure and occupation of me the said Lawrence Howley (except and reserved to the 
said Arthur Davenport, his heirs and assigns, all mines of coal being within the premises or any part thereof, together with free liberty to dig, search 
for, and get coals within the premises or any part thereof and with free ingress, agress, and regress to fetch, bear, and carry away all such coals as 
shall be had or gotten in or upon the premises, or any part thereof) To have and to hold the said lands, tenements, meadows, leasowes, pastures, 
and all other  premises with their appurtenances ( except as before excepted)  to me the said Lawrence Howley and my assigns for and during the 
term of  the lives natural of me the said Lawrence and of Katherine now my  wife and of Henry Howley, brother of me the said Lawrence, and for 
and during the term of the life of the longest liver of us.  As in and by the said Indenture of lease more at large appeareth by virtue whereof, and of 
livery thereupon executed, I the said Lawrence into the said lands &c. entered and was lawfully siesed thereof in my demesne as of freehold, for and 
during the term aforesaid. Now know ye that I the said Lawrence Howley for divers good considerations have hereby granted and surrendered to the 
said Arthur Davenport all the said lands &c. together with the said Indenture of lease, and all my right and title to the same.

21 This Indenture made the 1st May 21 James I [1623] Between Arthur Davenporte of Calveley co. Chester, Esquire, and Lawrence Hooley of Ranow in 
the said county yeoman, Witnesseth that in consideration of the surrender of a former lease, made by the said Arthur Davenporte unto the said 
Lawrence Hooley, of the lands hereinafter mentioned, for the term of the lives of Lawrence Howley, John Howley, his son, and Henrie Hooley, brother 
of the said Lawrence Hooley, and in consideration of a certain sum of money to the said Arthur Davenporte paid by the said Lawrence Hooley, the 
receipt whereof the said Arthur Davenporte doth hereby acknowledge .  And for other good considerations, he the said Arthur Davenport Hath let to 
farm to the said Lawrence Howley, all those lands &c. of the said Arthur Davenporte in Ranowe aforesaid, now in the occupation of the said 
Lawrence Hooley or his assigns, To have and to hold for his life , and for the lives of the said John Howley, his son, and of Katherin, wife of the said 
John, paying the yearly rent of 21s.8d by even portions, and two rent capons yearly at the feast of Easter, with power of distraint for non-payment of 
rent.  And the said Lawrence Hooley doth covenant with the said Arthur Davenporte in manner and forme following, that is to say, “That when and so 
often duringe the said terme as hee the said Arthur Davenporte in his lief tyme or afterwards, such person or persons respectivelie to whom the 
imediate Revercon or Remainder of the premises shall certenlie belonge, shall serve in his or their owne persons in the wars of our  Soveraigne Lord 
the King’s Majestie that now is, his heirs, or successors, or shall furnish or sett forwards any man or men towards the said warrs that then and soe 
often the said Lawrence Hooley and his assigns shall and will finde, provide for, have in readiness, and sett forth, one sufficient and Able Billman, 
with a plate coate and a sculle, to serve and attend upon the said Arthur Davenporte and his heirs in the warrs aforesaid, in such place, rowne, 
degree, and service of a billman as shall be assigned or appointed by the said Arthur Davenporte or the said person or persons aforesaid.”  And also 
that the said Lawrence Hooley, during the life-time of the said Arthur Davenporte and afterwards, pay herriotts &c according to the quantity of his rent.  
And the said Arthur Davenporte doth covenant with the said Lawrence Hooley, to grant the said lands &c in manner aforesaid, Provided that it shall 
be lawful for the said Lawrence Hooley and his assigns during the said term, to make marlepitts upon the premises,  to dig and get marle for the 
mending of the premises.  Provided also that the said Lawrence Hooley or his assigns shall not grant the said lands &c. to any person, without the 
consent of the said Arthur Davenporte, or his heirs, except to his wife or children, And moreover the said Arthur Davenporte hath made Edward 
Jackson and Richard Normansell his lawful attorneys, to deliver full possession of the said premises to the said Lawrence Hooley or to his attorney.
